Activity app not showing route

User uploaded file

Just saw this on iLounge this morning. Apparently the Activity App on iPhone is supposed to now show the routes of your workouts along with the temperature at the time of the workout. I assume they have managed to do this pairing the iphone with the apple watch rather than using an apple watch 2 (with the GPS chip) as the watch hasn't been released yet

Sadly doesn't seem to be working on my phone.....Anyone seen this working? Any ideas how to get it working. The watch and phone are already set to monitor location and movement

That's good news Dwheels. I was already on 3.1.3 when I was testing last night, so it made no difference for me. I did have an iPhone upgrade to 10.2.1 last night which doesn't seem to have changed anything either, except that, under Location Settings the Apple Watch Workout app does now have a purple location symbol next to it. i also notice that the workouts DO record a location, they just don't record any activity - see screen shots. in each case I've started the Workout on my watch once out of range of my phone

Hi there, I tried turning off my iPhone 7 and my Apple Watch and turning them on again but still unable to see route as well as the fact that I have also lost the time splits, I now only get an average. I have the latest software on both my iPhone 7 and my Apple watch, always keep them both updated. The last time I saw a route was on Sunday 8th January, 2017 but also no splits, just an average. I have not made any changes and checked everything that should have a tick next to it so am really stumped.

Has anyone got a solution??

I bought my watch in January and it worked once without my phone with me but now it doesn't show the route unless my phone is with me and locations services turned on.

On another note why do not all workouts get allocated to the exercise minutes for the day and some do??

How odd my GPS worked Jan 5 [first time on my new apple watch i used it] then Jan 10 it did not work in the GPS mode unless I had my phone with me and locations services turned on.

It is not in for repair / testing/ replacement!!! Only had it 3 weeks!

Anyone got any updates why this is happening??

I got my Apple Watch in December 2015 but you obviously have the 2. Also have latest software. My route is now showing as well as the splits which I can see if I press the down arrow next to Avg. Pace. I always have my phone on me and the times it didn't show the route I had my phone. Maybe it's an intermittent thing as I never changed any settings and everything like location etc was on. Guess this is not that helpful to you but just thought I would let you know. Never sure if route will show or not. Hope you solve your problem.

Ah so I'm not going mad. I have exactly the same problem which I first noticed New Year's Day when, having forgotten my phone, the Workout app helpfully told me, after 3 hours, that I'd not actually moved or done any exercise.

I Have all the latest software updated, iPhone 6s, Watch Series 2. Outdoor walks or runs record absolutely nothing if I don't have my iPhone - 0 feet, zero everything. With my phone, it all works beautifully.

just been for a test with another Apple Watch owner - which works fine, and his IPhone, under Location Services, has the small grey arrows next to the Apple Watch Faces and Apple Watch Workout app settings to show they've used location services - I don't have those arrows (though they are correctly there for other apps)

i suspect GPS is broken on my Watch

Hi All

I have finally worked it out.

Apple show you how to use the app but not what settings you need.

For Apple Watch 2

Settings > Privacy > Location Services <TURN ON>

THEN...

Click on > Location Services > [Scroll down to] System Services > and I have all of these options turned on.

If I turn off Location Services the GPS does not show a map but with the above turned on and without taking my phone it works.

The Apple guy explained that although you don't need your phone with you you still need location services turned on as it if it is turned off it turns something off on the watch to prevent the GPS tracking.

Hope this helps you all.

Hi all

I, too, am now working.

It's true that your watch (Series 2) copies location services info from your iPhone

But, all my settings were correct. Location Services was turned on in all the correct places

As I suspected, and after a few restarts with Apple on the phone, Apple seemed to confirm, my problem was a hardware fault. So, off my watch went, 2 days later I have a replacement

Excellent service from Apple. I've been for a couple of Outdoor Walks, leaving my phone at home, starting the Workout app when out of range of my phone just to make sure, and all works as it should. My watch shows my progress and when I get home correctly syncs with the Activity app on my phone to save it all away and show the route map. All green and red activity rings increase as they should

So, with a Series 2 Watch, if you're convinced you have everything set up correctly, maybe it's a hardware problem too. Oh, and with a Series 2 there's no need for all that calibration stuff - it's GPS doing the magic

So thanks Apple for excellent service and now it does indeed Just Work

I got my watch in December 2015 and I also experienced intermittent route and splits not showing but it's working perfectly now. I walked today and as I had also done a full workout at gym my watch battery died after just over 4 km on the walk but put the watch on charge when I got home and it synced with my phone and it showed the route and circles also moved up to where the battery stopped working. Pretty impressive. Happy walking.

Hi! I have the same problem since february 17. It was working fine the 16, I had the route and split times. Since the 17, average pace and no split and no route.

I have tried everything that is written on this thread and I don't know what to do now. The route was my favourite part. What can I do?

I have the apple watch 1 and both iphone 6 and watch have the latest os.

I have 6s and new watch series 2 - was having the same problem. Did alot of testing and I read the small print on the 'allow location access' (where you see the never and while using app options) -- It says that "access to your location is available only when this app or one of it's features is VISIBLE ON SCREEN (That's a HUGELY important thing to know if this is true)

I'm reading that to mean even if you do not have your iphone with you the workout app must be on screen for it to work. I just tested it and that made it work for me.

Hey, does this mean that you had to leave the screen on of your apple watch at all times while going on a workout without your phone, in addition to changing the location service settings?

I have the location settings as you described, but I have raise to wake turned on, which means that usually the screen of my watch is sleeping to preserve battery life. I'm wondering, maybe this is the thing everybody is missing?

I am in talks with Apple support whom have already escalated my issue to engineers, but so far no one has been able to figure this out.. I will update once I know something!

This is absolutely the answer. If you use the Quick Start option, no route mapping or splits are available. I tested this numerous times after reading your post and you hit the nail on the head. So now I always choose, for example, "Outdoor Walk" not "Quick Start Outddoe Walk" from my Apple Watch.

There do seem to be some strange variations. I went for a lunchtime walk today, used the "QuickStart Outdoor Walk" option and I've got all the info and a route map on my phone. Mine's a Series 2 Watch and I left my iPhone at home

My problem is that the routes shown for Outdoor Walk are incomplete. The endpoint is shown part way through the walk and portions of the walk are replaced by a dotted line between two points instead of the path I followed. I have the original Apple Watch running watchOS 3.1 and an iPhone 6 running 10.2.1. I always have the phone with me while on the walk and I'm always listening to a podcast. I thought the problem might be related to pausing the workout to wait for a traffic signal, but on my walk today I did not have to pause at all.
