Q: Import from iPhone to iMovie HD

Hi

I'm trying to merge some footage taken on an iPhone in portrait mode into iMovie HD.

It imports fine but my nephew shot the footage in portrait format and iMovie is stretching it to landscape format and distorting the footage.

Any ideas how to stop this from happening?

    Hi, Steve,

I'm assuming that you are using iMovie version 10.1.2 (latest version) and not iMovie 6 that often is referred to as iMovie HD.  (Correct me if I am wrong.)

If so, try selecting the clip in the time line and then clicking on the crop tool icon in the tool bar at the top of your screen, and selecting "Fit" in the selection box.  That should restore your portrait mode, but you will get black bars.

    Hi Thanks for the reply

I am however using iMovie 6 for my editing as i find it a better product than the later versions.

I'm thinking that my other option is to load it into the latest version and then output it from that to iMovie 6

It wouldn't hurt to try your suggestion of exporting from latest version to iM6.

I can't seem to replicate  your issue.  When I import an iPhone vid taken in portrait mode into iM6 it imports fine in portrait mode (with bars) -- but no landscape mode.  iM6 senses what aspect ratio the vid was shot in, and displays it at that ratio.  At least, that is my understanding.

You also could try importing directly into iM6 and then, when you share it out, adjust the aspect ratio using File/Export/Special Settings/Options/Size.   The free download MPEG Streamclip also can adjust aspect ratios.
