iOS 10 zoom causing lag & unresponsiveness

Hello,

I have multiple devices running iOS 10 ranging from an iPhone 5S, iPad mini 4, iPhone SE, and iPad Air 2. I have noticed that when the zoom toggle in settings is set to on (whether zoomed in or not), I experience a tremendous amount of lag, touch unresponsiveness, and inaccurate touching. It doesn't matter if I'm zoomed in all the way or zoomed out (double-tap with 3 fingers), simple navigation creates all sorts of problems for me. I'll describe a few issues that I am encountering below.;

1) Touch commands will sometimes not register. Even simple actions such as scrolling through different pages on the home screen to pinch-to-zoom in Safari & pictures have problems

2) When zoomed in, a lot of times, my button pressed are inaccurate. For example, a major problem I have is while in the mail app. If I swipe to the left to delete an email, I will get sporadic movement. In most cases, I have to swipe a little to the right of the line in order to do a full swipe. In other cases, sometimes touching a button like "OK" or pressing another button does not register. I may have to press slightly above, below, or around it to register. This is extremely troublesome. I especially have this issue with my iPad Air 2. I'm leaning towards it being a faulty digitizer.

Please note that when the zoom toggle is set to off in the settings app, I have no issues with lag or unresponsiveness.

Is anyone else having this same issue?

iPad Air, iOS 9.3.5, iPad Air 2

I definitely have this issue on my 12.9" iPad Pro. I have noticed this most when I am using the Apple Pencil for drawing/handwriting in apps such as Notes, Notability, etc. With Zoom on, drawing or writing in these apps is almost unusable. Pencil strokes are delayed, don't come through, or even - frequently - disappear after they are written out. This is most frustrating when I am taking handwritten notes in one of these apps. I would estimate that 10%-15% of the letters I write will disappear after I've written them. Strangely, if I put a napkin or something thicker like that under my palm, this seems to reduce the issue - so it seems like in my case it is interfering with the palm detection capability. It took me quite some time to figure out that the cause was Zoom.

I'm having that same issue. Both on my iPhone and my iPad. Both running iOS 10 at the moment. The issue is not related to iOS 10 in my opinion because I have been experiencing this issue for quite some time now.

Setting the zoom toggle to OFF makes the issue go away indeed, but of course this is not the solution. There is a reason why I need that zoom functionality. Disabling the zoom functionality makes it very hard for me to use my iPhone and iPad in some circumstances. So I find myself constantly toggling the zoom functionality ON and OFF again. Very annoying. I hope we will get a fix for this any time soon.

I believe it is an iOS issue. iOS 9's issue wqsn't quite as bad, but it did come with its own set of problems. The issue you were probably experiencing was that sometimes touching a button wouldn't register. You would sometimes have to press somewhere around the button for it to work. It is if your touch presses are not accurate while zoomed in.

For iOS 10, I found a workaround to get swiping working a litle better. I found that tapping on the screen once with 3 fingers in between each press or swipe helps with the issue. This is in no way a good solution, but it certainly helps you from having to toggle on and off zoom.

Also, I have contacted Apple support regarding this issue and they have escaladed it to their engineers. Hopefully, we will get a fix for it in the next iOS update.

I also do believe it is an iOS issue because I'm experiencing it on all my iOS devices. I was just indicating that it is not an iOS 10 specific issue. The issue was already there in previous versions of iOS. But you are right in that it was not that bad as it is now in iOS 10.

The issues I'm experiencing are the button press that is not correctly registering while zoomed in and the swiping that is not working all the time. The latter being enormously frustrating.

The workaround you describe is indeed also a way to temporarily "solve" the issue.

Anyhow, thx for posting this issue. It makes me feel less alone with this 🙂.

Hello, I'm experiencing the exact same bug on iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Air. Using zoom is almost impossible. When I've first discovered this bug, I downgraded back to IOS 9.3.5 and it did disappear. This is a very annoying bug and before Apple patches it, downgrading to 9.3.5 is the only solution I can think of. But the signing period will be over soon, so Apple should really notice it! Thanks.

Glad that I found this topic - which is actually a bug report rather than a question to the community...

I totally depend on the Zoom feature because of my visual impairment and I noticed immediately after upgrading to iOS 10 that something was suddenly wrong. First, I thought my iPhone 6 Plus can't cope with some new feature and tried disabling anything that seemed to be resource hungry. With no effect. Then, I started thinking my display might have gone bad physically - but why just on the day I upgraded to iOS 10? I completely reset my iPhone and restored it from Backup, again no effect. At some point, I found myself reading Samsung smartphone reviews...

The link to the Zoom feature was not apparent to me.

Dear Apple folks, please fix this one as soon as possible!

I have the same issue as well. I am a 5S user. The new update affects pretty much all the apps that I have, I notice this quite a bit with the Apple messaging app. An example, especially after writing a text and going back go to the main screen,

  1. Tap the back arrow multiple times...nothing. 😠
  2. Press the home button, go back to the Messaging App.... still takes me back to the same text I just typed. 😠😠
  3. Double tap the home button, close the Messaging App, open the Messaging App, finally, back to the main screen.

Hello,

I have a visual disability and I can confirm that i have the same sort of problem on the iPhone 6 Plus. I contacted Apple Support about it, but they asked me to reset the settings. This help the slow down a bit, but the problem is still very much there.

I have the feeling that the touch works, but if you touch an object (link, picture ...) the touch is sometimes registered as a long click and not a swipe. So the screen is not moving and you need to swipe several times to get something done.

I use zoom in combination with bigger font and bold font. Do you use this setting too or do you have the same issue without bigger and bolder font.

I hope Apple fixes this in iOS 10.1, this is a real struggle for me!

Thanks,

Greetings from Belgium

Tom

PS: sorry if the menu names are not always correct, I use iOS 10 in Dutch

Hi Tom,

Yes, I have the same issue with touches being reconized as long presses at times, as well. You're not the only one. I have also tested with both the font sizes as large and normal with the same issue. Changing the font size or leaving it at default does not cure the issue.

I agree that this is a major problem for accessibility users. For the meantime, I suggest that you temporarily use my bandage trick to work around the zoom issue. tap once with 3 fingers in between each swipe or press. Another thing you can do is use voiceover. I personally use voiceover about 30-40% in conjunction with zoom. I haven't experienced any major issues while using voiceover. Hope that helps until the next iOS update.
