Q: 4th generation time capsule as backup only

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch mid 2009 w/ 8 GB memory running OS X El Capitan V 10.11.6

I have a 4th generation time capsule

Can the time capsule be set up as backup only, running time machine, without running the wi-fi airport software

I have a much, newer, faster wi-fi router

If so, how?

I've tried different connections, different preferences in the software, can't get it to work

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Apple only supports Time Machine backups for network clients connected to the Time Capsule (TC) using a wireless connection. However, FWIW, I have used Time Machine with my Macs connected to multiple TCs with only Ethernet and have never experienced any issues doing so. Just be aware that this configuration would not be supported by Apple if you experience any data loss.

So you have at least two choices. Both would require the following:

    • The TC must be connected to the other router by Ethernet.
    • The TC must be reconfigured as a bridge.
    • The TC must be configured for a roaming network with the other router.

    The options then are:

    1. Leave wireless operational on the TC.  The only issue here would be the potential for Wi-Fi interference between the TC and the other router's wireless radios. This should only be an issue if the TC and other router are in the same room.
    2. Disable wireless on the TC.
