Q: Why are iOS 10 photo faces not scanning?

I've had iOS 10 for 3 nights now and only 650 of over 4,000 photos have been scanned for the faces feature. Last night few if any scanned.

Is anyone else having this problem? Or know how to fix it?

Thanks

I saw the same thing too.  It made a mention about plugging in your phone and "locking" it.  I assume it's a compute intensive process and wants power, and nothing else to do, to perform the scan.  I found that by the next day all my images were taken care of.  Did you open the app and then plug it in?

Are you using iCloud Photo Library? If you are using the "Optimize" option with iCloud, the photos need downloading from iCloud before they can be scanned.  and that means it needs also to be connected to WiFi while doing the persons scan. My iPhone is scanning very slowly, but it does. I am seeing about 50 new faces every morning in the People album, when I click the "+ Add People" button at the bottom of the people album.

Yes, I had optimize turned on. And of this morning it had stopped scanning at all, so I turned off optimize. I'll let you know what happens!

Do you have enough free storage to keep all originals full size on the iPhone?  Otherwise I would not risk to disable it.

I checked the size of my photo library and determined I had enough space. But when I changed the setting, the iPhone said I didn't have enough room but I want to head anyway after deleting some videos. Is there a way to just back up the photos and not the videos? I think the videos are what are taking up the most room.

No, it is all or nothing. Either all items will be stored locally, or "Optimize storage" will decide automatically what will be stored locally.

OK, I turned Optimize back on Saturday afternoon but still no dice. It's stuck at 675 out of 4,000 optimized and hasn't moves. I plug the phone in every night so it's had plenty of time to do the scanning.

    Any other ideas?

I had this same issue and this morning I decided to try turning iCloud Photo Library off and then on again. Once that process was all done I locked my phone and plugged it in and my photos finally started scanning. Not sure if this will fix it for everyone, but it worked for me

    That did it!

I turned off iCloud Photo Library and clicked OK when it said it would delete all my photos from the phone. It took about 30 seconds for the little wheel to stop, then I immediately turned it back on again.

This morning 4,300 of the photos had been scanned, with about 325 to go.  So turning it off and on again was the fix.

    Thanks.

Well, I spoke too soon. Those 325 photos are still sitting there, unscanned, and it's been 3 days.

Anyone else still having this issue?
