Sep 16, 2016 9:10 AM in response to abeniquezby Carolyn Samit,Perhaps not an update but upgrade.
Updating and syncing your iPhone via iTunes requires a Mac running at the minimum v10.9.5 or later as noted here > http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
To see which OS X your Mac has installed click your Apple menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Since v10.9.5 Mavericks is no longer available see if your Mac meets the requirements to upgrade to El Capitan > Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support
Then you would be able to install iTunes 12.5.1 the latest iTunes version available and sync and update your iPhone.
