iOS 10 notification using flash

I keep my phone on silent during the work day and use "LED flash for alerts" accessibility setting.

Under iOS 9 this worked well, I would see the flash and when I looked at my phone there was a notification I had configured to give me an alert or a sound - an important email or text message, etc.

Under iOS 10 I am getting a lot of "ghost" flashes - the flash goes off but there are no notifications listed when I look at the phone. I've been going through, looking for notifications to turn off but I am still getting this.

Is there some way to get a definitely list or view of what is causing these ghost notifications?

twist944 has the right answer/info. Its bc apple ios flashes the LED indicator for ANY incoming email. Really annoying and really poor on apples part to not fix/address this.

I had been casually searching (for many months) for the solution to why my led was flashing so often (yet no notices on screen triggering the flash).

finally, one day, i noticed that i had just received a random email at the same time the flash was triggered... so yes, this is the reason- the led flash will trigger EVERY time you get a new email (assuming phone screen is off), not just for VIP labled email address, but EVERY EMAIL...

unbelievable, that this has not been fixed or atleast give us more options to control when the led flashes (ie in settings).

really sad apple doesnt look at these forums for how to improve/FIX iOS..

ISSUE REMAINS AS OF iOS 11.0.3

Really, what a useless copy/paste answer by “Apple support rep“

The actual answer and reason there is so much confusion over the mysterious LED flashes (I experienced them too, for several months, and only recently figured out the source)-for some reason iOS flashes the LED for every single email you receive.

( This makes no sense, and Apple refuses to fix it).

Apple clearly has the “VIP list” the sole purpose of which is so the user can specify email addresses from which they want notifications ( I flash the LED if it’s a VIP email, not on every single email)

Or they could just give us more options for the LED alert be on just on/off.

.... or in Apples’ infinite ( and unquestionable) wisdom they can make the LED alertjust about useless by flashing at all the time.

I am getting flashes for email despite the fact that the only notification I have set for email is badges. I had to set my email accounts to only fetch manually to prevent random flash notifications. It would be nice if I could tailor the flash notifications more specifically. I get flashes for things I don't care about and can't make them work for things I really want them for.

I had the same experience after upgrading to iOS10. However, I just upgraded my iPhone today to 10.2.1, and the LED Flash seems to be working as I want - which is to NOT FLASH for badge only notifications. I have my email set to Badge App Icon only, with Show in Notification Center turned off, Sounds set to None, Show on Lock Screen off and Alert Type = None. I also do not have any VIP emails set. When I receive a new email, I get a badge icon only but no flash. Same is true for Facebook; badge icon only and no flash. However, for apps that have sound and alerts in addition to badges, I get the LED flash like I want. Try the upgrade to 10.2.1 and see if that change helps you.

Hello there, Devin Ceartas!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with your iPhone and LED notification. I know how important it is to be sure everything on the iPhone is working properly. First, check out this article with steps to Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

The next thing you might want to try is going to Settings on the iPhone and then to Reset. Once there, tap Reset all Settings. This will reset the iPhone settings, but not erase personal information such as photos, contacts, or music. It will, however, remove Wi-Fi and VPN settings so be sure you have those settings and passwords ready for when the iPhone is started back up.

If that doesn't work, it would be a good idea to be sure there is not a software issue as the root cause of this for you.

  1. Check out this article for the steps for How to backup your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  2. Use this article for the steps to Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings.
  3. Once that is done, set the phone up as new and test the phone to see if the issue is still going on. Then, follow this article to Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Cheers!

I am also having this issue...vip and icloud emails have notifications, and I want the flash. regular email has NO notifications, and in ios10 I am also getting the flash (never did in ios9 or earlier) and since I get a lot of email, this is really draining my battery! I have turned off the flash for now, but am concerned about missing a "vip" email - which is why I used the flash. I think this is a bug they missed - hoping it gets fixed, AND that it is pointed out specifically in the release notes so I can turn it back on again...
