Since SMS uses the voice channel, you should be correct. If there is a problem with their VOLTE implementation, however, I can see how that could theoretically throw things into a state of chaos.

The data shouldn't, but the settings for LTE for AT&T can be Enable LTE: Off, Voice & Data, Data Only. As Tim said, it could be that if it was set for voice and data that it could create an issue. That was my thought at least too.

Apple should come up with some help. what the good solution for APPLE to solve this issue. I believe this is a norm problem for many apple user it is annoying. By spending so much money on the phone yet the stupid phone cant perform a simple feature. what a disappointment just updated the latest Apple software XXXXX worst still after update it cant even read. Last use to be able to read but cannot send SMS

What do you mean by HANG SMS? You said you got your phone changed? You mean it was replaced? There is no setting for SMS on the iPhone. Your post does not make a lot of sense ranting about it being a normal problem and money. SMS is a carrier issue, unless there is something wrong with the iPhone hardware, which is what it seems your problem was since you had the device replaced.

Yeah, it becomes a bit less clear to me under that circumstance. I'm still guessing that the SMS is sent over the traditional voice channel even then. But, just guessing.

No, it does not show that it is a phone issue. So you are not saying that you changed your iPhone, you changed to a different brand phone. Again, the iPhone does not have any settings to handle SMS. That is handled by the carrier, and you have to have an SMS provision on your account. The only setting on the iPhone is for MMS. The telco is just brushing you off. SMS works just fine on an iPhone.

To my knowledge, it is still sent over the voice, unless it is an MMS. That requires data. However, it could be an issue with the LTE setting for voice & data, but I have not experienced any issues with my AT&T set with SMS, although I have very few friends & family members that do not have an iOS device. I think that most of the AT&T markets are supporting LTE now, but if it doesn't, setting that to voice & data could create an issue. I know that it did for voice calls in the beginning, as they were rolling out VoLTE.

Maybe the "other phone" isn't capable of using VoLTE or has that option turned off.

Because there is a problem with the provisioning of SMS on the account for that phone. The carrier has to handle that problem, like I said there is no setting for SMS on the iPhone.

Shockingly turning off LTE worked. Thank you!

I will follow up with the AT&T person that helped me and tell them what solved my issue. Maybe they can look into things on their end.
