how do i activate macbook pro keyboard?

While writing an email I tried to do some editing and the keyboard stopped working. I may have inadvertently pressed one or more keys that disabled the keyboard and I am unable to it.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012

2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

OS X ElCapitan Version 10.11.6
