Q: Cannot upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard

Firstly, i bought a second hand macbook late 2006 3GB of ram second hand off ebay a couple months back. I downloaded far too much stuff so wanted to reset the mac to factory settings to start with a clean install again. So i rebooted and when it came to installing Lion i signed in with my apple ID and an error message popped up and said try again later. I looked online and found lots of people having this issue but with no solution. Confused i rang apple support and the gentleman told me to purchase snow leopard CD and install that then upgrade back up to Lion 10.7.5 which i previously had and seemed like a good idea.

I am currently running 10.6.8 but having issues with the software update feature. I click restart and the system restarts and all that pops up is the background image and the cursor.

I would me most grateful if someone could give me some advice as im currently £15 out of pocket and all i wanted to do was a clean install Thank you so much in advanced

I suspect that your issue is more complicated than what I'm about to say, but do you realize that, like Snow Leopard, Lion (10.7) is a paid upgrade? See the link below:

There is a reasonable opinion that Snow Leopard is one of Apple's best operating systems and some have chosen to stay with it even if it means not being up-to-date with security fixes. Others need to run newer software that requires later operating systems.

Offhand I don't know what is the latest OS that your computer can install and run. Perhaps someone can answer that question. Also there is a "community" here specifically for the older MacBooks.

I have this issue also.  After more thought I am getting grouchier and grouchier.  You know how I got into this mess?  The Apple Store -  a genius recommended that my MacBook could get to Lion with the model I had and to just get the same size hard drive that the machine originally came with currently (160 gb.).

So, with that great news, I went out and bought an SSD that was the same size (160gb).   I swapped out the drives and the MacBook loaded for the first time.  I used my Snow Leopard disk and have Snow Leopard.  But, now when the rubber hits the road there are issues.  Nothing will download from the App Store and I don't know what the fix is.

I know I wouldn't have bought more RAM and a SSD Hard Drive for it, because someone may have given haphazard info about my MacBook.   But, at least this Genius appeared to do some research.

When I brought it to another Apple Store the second Genius played with his Ipad for a bit and said that is as far as you can go.  I asked why, he said that's the info he had on his Ipad.  I didn't get mad right away, but later I was like I just whizzed away $400 on upgrades on what is now like a Chromebook equivalent.  So I made another appointment, but, in the meantime, maybe there is a Genius somewhere in this forum, that has gone through this process successfully.  Successful help would be much appreciated.

I have a mid 2007.  I had to swap out the original hard drive, and I got an SSD same size as the one before (as suggested by Apple Store).

So I am good on the specs.  Now I need info on why the app store won't show images or allow me to download.  Basically, I can't get to Lion.

    OS X Lion system requirements

To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:

    • An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    • Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended)
    • 7 GB of available disk space
    • 2 GB of RAM

If your Mac does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your Mac before installing Lion.

For more information, see OS X Lion - Technical Specifications.

If your Mac did not ship with Lion, you will need to buy the media here .
