Q: iOS turned my screen black but I can hear the buttons and notifications

I have a iPhone 5s and recently upgraded to the iOS 10 and it was working okay the first few days until this morning. I was using it and a pop up message came on my screen mentioning the upgrade on iOS 10 and before I was able to read it, my whole screen went black. I can see a little bit of light as if the apps are on the screen but I can not see a thing. The buttons work perfectly and I can hear the incoming calls and notifications. I already tried turning the screen off and on with the reset option (Holding the home button and sleep/wake button down till the apple logo comes out) and the screen continues to be black. I can see when the apple logo appears because the screen seems to light up but the screen and I can put my password because of the locations of the numbers but the screen continues to be black .

    Hello Shirl0908,

Thanks for asking your question about the screen on your iPhone 5s here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important my iPhone is for everything these days! Here is what I recommend we try first.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. If you can, make a backup in iCloud or iTunes. Use this article for help with that: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Once your data is safe, you want to check this help article: Get help with the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You want to go through the first section titled "If your screen is too dim, too bright, or you see only faint images".

If you reach step number 5 and still have the same issues with the display, the only option is to follow that information, and contact Apple Support as it seems there may be some issue with the hardware that we need checked.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
