Q: Camera Roll pictures out of order in iOS 10

I just received my new iPhone 7 and after successfully restoring it from a backup of my iPhone 6, I noticed that all my photos in the Camera Roll are out of sync. I realize they are supposed to be in chronological order from when they were taken, but they are very mixed up...some photos/videos that I took back in February. I have always restored my new device from a backup whenever I've upgraded to the latest iPhone and have NEVER had this problem.

I have read through some of posts on here where people have had this issue or something like it in the past, but nothing has been listed as a direct fix for this problem. I have tried anything and everything I have found online or here as a way around fixing the out-of-order, and nothing has worked.

This is extremely frustrating! Would someone please help?!

I have the new iPhone 7 - 256Gb Black, running iOS 10.0.1.

Thanks!

iPhone 7, iOS 10.0.1

Exactly same situation here...  my wife's was fine; my pictures were all jumbled with newest pics in the middle of 5k+ pictures.   I have also upgraded to 10.0.2 and tried multiple restores from iCloud.

Just not acceptable for those of use who use our cameras more than most.  All other folders are in order.

Come on Apple; this is a major mistake.

PS.  Has anyone found an aftermarket app that allows sorting of the camera roll?  Tons of picture apps, but they all seem to copy your pics into a new app to manipulate vs. the actual camera roll.

I reported the issue as well to Apple.

For me, it wasn't one picture out of place, but blocks of pictures. The actual blocks themselves are in proper order, but they're just wedged in the wrong location.

Anyone else notice that too? Hopefully that information is helpful to determine the fix.

Same issue here. Backed up my iPhone 6 to my Mac before going to Verizon to get the 7 (128gb) and once I restored my new phone with the backup from a few hours earlier, all of my camera roll pictures were out of chronological order.. I've tried restoring to no avail. Also called Apple Support and they said they did not have a solution for me either.

Same here.. Backup from iPhone 6 to iPhone 7 and the "camera roll" is out of order, but "moments" still works fine.

The problem has already been reported to apple. After 1st and 2nd level support, now the development asked me to send some screenshots of the problem.

Hope this gets fixed very soon..

About the ordered blocks in the unordered view: Yeah I've noticed that, I've seen them ordered by Month/Day without ordering them by year like usually.

This is a known issue, apple is working on it.  Instead of using your album, use photos in the lower left corner.  That will help you navigate in chronological order...

How do you know it's a known issue with Apple and they're working on a fix?

Yes, i just talked to support.  They said it should get taken care of in the next patch or two.  you're albums are out of wack, but if you go to photos not albums you should be in good shape until they come out with a fix.

Yeah, it's sorted correctly in Moments, but 3rd-party-apps are using the album camera roll to select pictures and currently it's almost impossible to select the right picture in those apps.

I had same issue. got new iphone7, backed up my 6s, restored to new iphone7. Camera roll split in the middle, i.e. pix at top were from September 2014, flowed to current, then picked up from when I got my first iphone 3s down to more Sep 2014 at bottom. Spoke with support. Facts were presented. First, my 6s had IOS 10.0.1 because I keep it upgraded. the new iphone 7 was at 10.0 when I got it. Support said it should not have allowed me to restore from a 10.0.1 backup to a 10.0 (but I was able to and saw no stop signs in the process). His suggestion was I reset my iphone7 to factory settings, upgrade it to most current IOS as a 'new' phone, then restore from the backup from the 6s at 10.0.1. I was unwilling because I didn't want to have to mess with all the setup again. I finally relented and did exactly what he suggested. It worked! Pix now in order! Stuff from messages were lost between first restore and re-restore. Pix taken between first restore and re-restore were lost but I was able to recover them from 'photo stream' I share with my wife.

Bottom line, if Apple fixes this you won't need to do this, and the longer you wait and take new pix and do other stuff that would get lost, the more likely I'd wait for Apple to fix. If your situation appears the same as I described, and you can afford to copy any pix taken since upgrading to the iphone7 to a place you can copy them back from, do the reset on the 7, upgrade to to current IOS and re-restore from your last good 6S backup. Good luck.

    Same for me...

I just got a follow-up call from German Apple Support. I've also told them about this discussion here and seafan1's fix (unfortunately this is no option for me). They asked me to send them some of the mixed up pictures to check on the metafiles. Furthermore they needed screenshots of my archived iPhone (5s and 7) backups in iTunes preferences while mousing over them (if you do so, some further information like iOS version and build appear).

    I'll keep you guys updated...

I've spent days with Apple Support via Twitter. 100% useless.

In the end he just told me to re-organise my photos in the camera roll. Agggg. Does he not even know how his own operating system works!

    Frustrating beyond belief.

    SAME ISSUE!

Just upgraded from a 6S Plus to a 7 Plus Jet Black which first of all... the extended wait. But now I'm just realizing after restoring from my backup all 19,000 images i have are out of order!!!!!

    What the **** Apple?

From reading other forums it looks like most people are seeing the most recent photos from September of 2014. and then obviously once you take a new photo on your new phone it goes in the right order. But if you want to look at an image you took a few days ago on your old phone GOOD LUCK! YOU'RE SCREWED!

    FIX THIS APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!
