Q: Camera Roll pictures out of order in iOS 10

I just received my new iPhone 7 and after successfully restoring it from a backup of my iPhone 6, I noticed that all my photos in the Camera Roll are out of sync. I realize they are supposed to be in chronological order from when they were taken, but they are very mixed up...some photos/videos that I took back in February. I have always restored my new device from a backup whenever I've upgraded to the latest iPhone and have NEVER had this problem.

I have read through some of posts on here where people have had this issue or something like it in the past, but nothing has been listed as a direct fix for this problem. I have tried anything and everything I have found online or here as a way around fixing the out-of-order, and nothing has worked.

This is extremely frustrating! Would someone please help?!

I have the new iPhone 7 - 256Gb Black, running iOS 10.0.1.

Thanks!

iPhone 7, iOS 10.0.1

by the way.. the last 2nd Level Apple Support Engineer who was working on my case said: its a wilful/intentional behavior.

i was a bit upset and asked him to give it to the development again, as it's surely a bug!

I have tried a fresh restore and the photos are still out of order! I've also been reading that public beta iOS 10.1 doesn't resolve the problem either. It's becoming very annoying as other messaging apps rely on this folder to be correct so you can send photos.

I can't believe that more people aren't complaining loud about this.  This really is unacceptable.

The reason why more aren't complaining is because I think it only affected a few early adopters.  Thye problem is caused because we updated our iPhone 6's to 10.0.1 or 10.0.2 and when the iPhone 7 first shipped it shipped with stupidly iOS 10.0.0.

There lies the problem with our restores.

I'm guessing the iPhone 7 now ships with 10.0.2 so only a few users were affected.  Maybe too few for Apple to fix the problem ever!

That's why I restored my iPhone 7 to my last iPhone 6 backup and the problem was fixed. Yes I lost 2 weeks of some data but it's worth it.  The longer you leave it the bigger the gamble you are taking.

    Good luck!

iOS 10.1 Public Beta 3 did not fix the issue for me.

I'm going to hold out for 10.1, but I think pagemakers4 is correct as to why this happened. If I do end up restoring to my 6s backup, what will I lose?

You'll lose some data between now and the iPhone 6 backup.

    For me it was minimal.

If Apple don't fix this for us (you) few users the longer your leave the restore the worse your situation will be.

This is good to see quite a few replies on this issue, perhaps Apple may listen. I'm a little surprised none of the Apple employees or testers were affected given they are also likely to be early adopters.

Anyway, i dont think I have my 6S backup anymore so will probably try a full reset when 10.1 is released but otherwise will just have to live with it.

I have an iPhone 6, and have a similar problem, only I haven't restored my phone to cause this to happen. I just went into my camera roll a few days ago, and all my pictures were rearranged what appeared to be randomly. About a day later, they were suddenly back in the correct order. I just went into my camera roll again a few minutes ago, and now they're all mixed up again. I'm using iOS 10.0.2.

Same for me - didn't get an iPhone 7 and didn't restore. Just on my iPhone 6...same one I've had for 2 years now. I just woke up this morning and all of my pictures were out of order. I'm on iOS 10.0.2 as well.

I also had this issue after upgrading my iPhone 5 to an iPhone 7.  My backup and my iPhone 7 were on iOS 10.0.3, so it's not just an earlier adopter thing.  Apple NEEDS to fix this.

For those of you who are as frustrated as I was and are willing to jump through a few hoops, here is my workaround to solve the issue:

    1. Use iCloud or iTunes backup your photos. (safety first!)
    2. Install the Photosync app on your iPhone.
    3. Install the Photosync companion on a computer connected to your home WIFI.
Note: On my PC, I had to open Services and start the Bonjour Service the first time before my phone could see it.
    4. Sync all your iPhone photos to your computer using Photosync.
    5. Delete all the photos on your iPhone.
    6. Resync all the photos on your computer (from Step 4) back to your iPhone.
Note: You could sync them back in chunks to manually control the order, otherwise, it appears to default to transferring files in chronological order (oldest first).

It's a bit labored, but has calmed my frustration in the long run. Now if Apple could just fix the mail threads.
