Q: Camera Roll pictures out of order in iOS 10

I just received my new iPhone 7 and after successfully restoring it from a backup of my iPhone 6, I noticed that all my photos in the Camera Roll are out of sync. I realize they are supposed to be in chronological order from when they were taken, but they are very mixed up...some photos/videos that I took back in February. I have always restored my new device from a backup whenever I've upgraded to the latest iPhone and have NEVER had this problem.

I have read through some of posts on here where people have had this issue or something like it in the past, but nothing has been listed as a direct fix for this problem. I have tried anything and everything I have found online or here as a way around fixing the out-of-order, and nothing has worked.

This is extremely frustrating! Would someone please help?!

I have the new iPhone 7 - 256Gb Black, running iOS 10.0.1.

Thanks!

iPhone 7, iOS 10.0.1

Sorry, a little slow to report, but Public Beta 4 did not fix the issue for me.

Before I throw in the towel and just restore from my 6s backup, I'm going to restore from a backup I just made. Curious to find out if the restore process will fix it, or if it has to be a restore from a backup before I experienced this issue.

Hi anyone, has anybody tried going into 'settings' then 'photos & camera' and turning off 'icloud photo library' then switching it back on? Does that resolve the problem for anybody? Apple online chat suggested this to me this morning but I'm not around wi-fi to try this yet. All my photos within icloud photo library are in correct chronological order, it suggests that between iOS 10.0.1 and then my new iPhone 7 out of the factory being iOS 10, there's been some data corruption within the activating my new phone and the iOS update.

yes i tried that. same thing. but then i realised in my iCloud photo library, in the Photos app and in the All Photos album, the photos were in the order of import date and not when it was taken.

So if that's intentional on Apple's part, it's not a bug

I don't use  'icloud photo library'. That was just Apple online chat trying to get rid of you.

On a separate note, how many owners of a waterproof (IP67 rated) iPhone 7 have noticed that the Apple warranty does not cover liquid damage. Doesn't sound too waterproof tome.

I also have same issue with my pictures being out of chronological order.

I upgraded from an Iphone 6 to Iphone 7.

Before restoring to the new phone, I made sure my MacBook running latest OS and updated to Sierra. I made sure iTunes is latest version. I did a backup to iTunes and an Icloud backup.

I use Icloud Photo Library and I pay for the 200GB storage. I had 13,000 pictures on my Iphone 6. All pictures taken with iPhones I owned in the past since 2012. Therefore all pictures were in chronological order by date taken.

After restoring from the iTunes backup (photos downloaded from Icloud), they were no longer in order. I now have about 20 photos that are recent, followed by a block of pictures from 2013-2014, then pictures from September of this year in order until 2014, then missing the block that got moved, then have 2013-2012.

I tried restoring from the Icloud backup, same results.

I opened Icloud.com to see the order of photos and it matching the mixup on my phone.

I opened Photos on my mac, which did not have any pictures after upgrading the OS to Sierra, but the order was correct. The photos here stopped at the point where they start with the wrong order on my phone.

So it seems whatever went wrong with Icloud went wrong after. (Last Friday).

I now turned off Icloud on my phone and my MacBook.

I phoned apple support but they could not suggest anything that would fix this.

Very disappointed that I'm paying for the bigger Iphone to be able to carry my large Photos Library with me on it, and paying for the extra Icloud Storage, and not being able to quickly find pictures on my phone in the All photos album.

An update to my last post above. I have tried what Apple online support suggested and it doesn't work. I honestly sort of expected it not to work but tried never-the-less. So, it's over to you now Apple for an actual fix to the problem which is very annoying and the user experience isn't great especially when you use some messaging apps that will only allow you to use the 'all photos' folder. My suggestion everyone is to contact apple support and push for resolution, as this communities post will probably and sadly result in nothing being done.

Its happened because your backup had a higher iOS version than the iOS version shipped on your iphone 7.

You either need to restore your old iphone 6 backup which will fix the issue or wait for Apple to hopefully fix the issue wh could be days, weeks, months or never.

Totally agree pagemakers4, I did explain this to the apple support rep. I refuse to restore from an old iPhone 6s backup.. Apple's update with iOS 10 didn't go smoothly at all and some of us are now paying the price for that. I also hear that iOS 10.1 beta doesn't fix the problem neither.

The worry is it only affects a few users because I guess the 7 now ships with 10.0.2 so the problem no longer exists.

It's whether Apple cares enough for a few users (ten of thousands I'm sure).

I took the plunge and restored. I lost 2 weeks of bits but it was worth it.

    Gook luck in your quest.

As mentioned ive logged a bug report

    https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I think the only way its going to get sorted is keep reporting the issue and maybe send this discussion thread and issue to alot of online news sites.......

Real shame it has to come to this much effort to get an issue sorted.

I don't think it's the Iphone 7 being shipped with iOS 10 issue.

I know 2 people who did not get a new phone and have same issue.

My son using an Iphone 6 and a friend a 6s and they both have their pictures out of order.

When you say you restored from an old Iphone 6 backup, is your backup a full backup and not using Icloud Photo Library? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you use Icloud photo library, your backup will use your current Icloud photos. Which are in the wrong order.

I have a feeling it's an Icloud issue. Perhaps as the pictures upload to iCloud or as they restore to the phone, some pictures upload faster than others. As the order of pictures loading change, the order they show up in Photos change.

If it's true that your all photos album displays pics in order they were added, and not by the original date they were taken, this would explain why they are not in order.

My Iphone 7 is my first restore from Icloud Photo Library. Last time I restored to a phone was 2 years ago when I got my Iphone 6 and at that time I did not use Icloud Photo Library, restored from iTunes full backup without any issue.

I installed iOS 10 Public Beta 5 and still no resolution.

Happy (not happy) to to see this thread growing. Hope Apple gives it some attention soon.
