Q: My iPad 2 is sluggish. I'm thinking not enough memory as I have about 15 tabs open. Can I add memory?

I get this error in Chrome too often. I lose pages I've just opened. My iPad 2 is sluggish. I'm thinking not enough memory as I have about 15 tabs open. Can I add memory?  I've never heard of it but I need to do something to perk this up

Why not first try deleting Chrome and/all any app you don't use on a regular basis for more memory space. Don't worry about open tabs. The only tab that is open is the one you're using.

Hi. No, you cannot add memory, and 15 tabs is a lot, particularly if any is loaded up with ads. BTW, I think Bob means to close apps not being actively used, not delete them. You should make sure you have significant free storage also. You might clarify whether your problem is with processor memory, or file storage on your device.

Thanks. The only things I keep open are the Amazon Video app and a mail app, besides Chrome.  I'm a Windows person so have no clue which memory is being used. The error indicates it's most likely memory.  My tabs are open but not actively working. I X them so not to use any processor or memory.  In Windows I can click and see what is using what.  On this iPad I'm lost

You have two types of memory. The memory in the processor that is used when running an app. And the memory used when you install a app and as you use the app the data it accumulates.

Only the app on the screen is using the processor memory. Apps can update in the backround but the amount of processing power is negligable.

The memory for the installed apps can be seen at settings> general> Storage and iCloud usage> storage> manage storage. If you are short of memory these are the apps that should be deleted if you no longer use them.

Tthanks. It just snapped and I lost four sentences. Says I used 6.2 gb and have 6.5 available. Amazon Video uses 1.7 gb yet I closed it and nothing freed up. If I have that much free I shouldn't crash, right?

You're welcome. Closing an app will have no effect on the amount of room it takes up in storage. Deleting the app will. You have plenty of free space so I wouldn't delete anyrhing right now.

Many people reported their iPad 2 getting slower as the operating systems got larger. Unfortunately as many people reported their iPad2's were working fine.

Time for basic trouble shooting. Start with a reset and work your way up to Restoring your iPad. You may have to install a fresh copy of IOS 9.3.5. Unfortunately without a computer I can't help you with the Restoring process.

First try the most basic reset (forced start.) Press and hold both the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait until your iPad starts on it's own.
