iTunes 12.5.1. Crashed

Last night I upgraded my iphone 5S 32 GB to iOS 10.0.1. It worked perfectly.

However this morning I connected it to my iTunes 12.1.2 (Windows 7 64-bit) but it iTunes couldn't read my iPhone. There was a writing in the box: "itunes could not connect to this iphone because an invalid response."

I read in this forum that to run a iOS 10 iPhone, I need to upgrade my iTunes to 12.5.1. I thought maybe this was my problem. Several advice in the net said that I should do this and that. But my best guess was it's a problem with me recently upgraded iOS. I connected my iPad and my wife's iphone (using previous iOS 9.xx) and iTunes can read those devices.

Maybe the problem was confirmed, I must upgrade iTunes to 12.5.1. So I did.

But now the iTunes 12.5.1. don't want to launch after installed. It crashed. Here's the details written in the box:

hi Darren, it didn't work. There is no message 'Error 2', neither 'Error 7'. It's not even 'If the issue only occurs when an iOS device is connected, learn what to do if iTunes become unresponsive when you connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch'.

Any other advice? Should I run it in Safe Mode? The problem is my iTunes (12.5.1) doesn't even work. Can't do safe mode.

Haven't done 'disconnect me computer from internet', or the other tips.

Is there any advice you can give me? I read in discussions.apple.com many people also experience the same problem.

thank you in advance.

I reverted to iTunes 12.4.3.1, but I had to clean out the registry of all instances where "apple, ipod, itunes" are referenced. iTunes 12.4.3.1 kept on crashing after the first installation of 12.5.1.21 and cleaning the registry did the thing.

After getting 12.4.3.1 working again and by some small glimmer of hope that 12.5.1.21 would now install without any issues, was a very long shot which did not work.

Just remember to go to your iTunes music library and replace the "iTunes Library.itl" file with the .itl file from the previous version of iTunes. It should be in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" file.

dear Riaan and Jaydeep,

I'm unfamiliar with systems. Can you describe more on how to fix my problem? My previous iTunes version was 12.1.2.(Windows 7 64-bit) before I installed 12.5.1. The previous iTunes (12.1.2) couldn't read iOS 10. That's why I upgrade the iTunes into 12.5.1. But the new iTunes crashed whenever I tried to open.

1. How can I uninstall iTunes 12.5.1. completely and clean all related files? There was an instruction Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates I followed, which delete/ uninstall every single related files from the 12.5.1. (bonjour, apple support, etc). I tried to install older iTunes from downloaded driver that I still keep, but I couldn't complete installing process. Not sure why, but I suspect some related files were deleted when I cleaned using the above procedure.

2. If iTunes 12.5.1. won't work on Windows 7 64-bit, how can I install previous iTunes version that can work on Windows 7 64-bit? I searched and cannot find the older version, so I can download the driver again. I'm hoping can install the older version, so at least my kids' iPad and iPod can work/ connect/ synchronize with the older iTunes. I'm also thinking to reset my iPhone 5S to factory settings, hoping it would return to previous iOS 9.

iOS 10 is giving me headache, as I cannot connect my iPhone 5S to iTunes and cannot synch to my music library.

thank you. Desperately need help.

If you still have the original error as posted then such errors can usually be fixed by deleting the offending dll, then repairing the component it is part of from the programs and features control panel. CoreAudioToolbox.dll is part of Apple Application Support and can normally be found in

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support or
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

where the name of the Program Files folder may vary by region.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If you're getting a different error now when you either try to install or launch iTunes please post back with the details and I'll attempt to offer relevant advice for what to do next.

I repaired the component using the method shown in one of the above posts, but still I've the same problem,

The general steps are the same if it is a similar issue. WebKit.dll is also found in the Apple Application Support folder.

I've recently found cases where that approach doesn't work however. It seems to be a different problem relating to registration of the dll file, however registering it by hand doesn't work. In my particular case iTunes would open but crash on attempting to access the iTunes Store. Try the following approach, if won't do any harm even if it doesn't help.

Enter one of the following in a command prompt where the path to your version of WebKit.dll indicates which you should choose:

SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

Weirdly once I got mine working I was able to reset my path and visiting the store no longer causes iTunes to crash.
