Iphone 7 and 7 plus's screen dimmer/yellowish than iphone 6 and 5s

Hi,

Is anyone facing the same issue as me when looking at their new iphone 7/7plus?

I noticed both the 7 model's screen resolution were more yellowish and dimmer than the previous models even though all of them had their brightness set to the maximum.

Does anyone have any idea why is it like that? Thanks!

Just a followup note on this, since the iPhone 7 Plus display was still bothering me.

If I tweak the white balance:

1. General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Color Filters

2. Turn the Color Filters on.

3. Select Color Tint

4. Turn the Intensity all the way down and the Hue about 75% up.

Then I can actually make the iPhone 7 Plus, on the left, look brighter and whiter than the iPhone 6 Plus on the right. Not at maximum brightness, but at about 80% maximum brightness, where I use it most of the time.

I hope this helps others where the dingy yellowish screen is driving them crazy, like it was me. It's much more pleasing now.

And I packaged up the iPhone 6 Plus now to send to my sister!

What to do in this case? I´ve bought Iphone 7Plus last month, noticed the same problem, complained to Apple support and the answer was it´s not normal and should be taken to a technical assistance. I think it should be replaced immediately. It was supposed to be 25% brighter! Images on Iphone 6 Plus are much better. Completely disappointed. Below Iphone 6Plus (right) and 7 Plus (left). Pictures with flash on Iphone 7Plus are also worse than 6Plus. Or Apple fix it or I´ll never buy it anymore. I´ve bought it from Internet Apple Store and would never imagine Apple should sell a defective IPhone like this.

I don't disagree with you. It's not a fix for the ultimate problem, which is that Apple is manufacturing devices which are not as advertised and which are not, at maximum level. brighter, and noticeably more vibrant and brilliant than previous devices. It is also clear there is great variance between different devices.

However, it is a Band-Aid, as you say, and allows me to use my device without daily frustration at the brightness level that I normally work out.

Since I ended up with an unlocked device and an extended two-year AppleCare warranty, I should be able to sell it at a good price when the next model comes out.

In the meantime, this is what my iPhone 7 Plus, on the left, looks like next to my iPhone 6 Plus, on the right. This is after that hue tweaking, and the brightness level is set to about 80% of max, rather than full max.

When done this way, to me, and I agree it's subjective, the iPhone 7 Plus now looks whiter and brighter and the iPhone 6 Plus looks like it is the one with the slightly yellow-wish cast to it.

Do I wish Apple would own up to the problem? Yes of course. And I wish that Apple would not advertise the iPhone 7 Plus as 25% brighter, and noticeably more vibrant than brilliant. It isn't.

Since Apple did refund me on my original device I had the option of opting out of the entire iPhone system and moving on to something else.

This just seem to me an OK compromise for now and I am not bothered when looking at my screen all the time.

I will certainly be extremely careful before deciding whether to buy another Apple product though. I will double and triple check return policy, and spend a lot of time comparing what else is out there.

Oh yes. Here is my own thread on the problem:

iPhone 7 Plus display dingier than iPhone 6 Plus display

You can Google search and find many discussions on this issue. After several months of going back and forth with Apple, even though I bought my iPhone 7 Plus from my carrier, Apple's liaison offered me a refund, which I took and returned that phone after they tried 3 exchanges. Then last week I bought a new one direct from the Apple store. Same problem.

I was debating whether to return this new one for a refund within the new 14 day window, but since it is sim-free and otherwise works well I believe I will keep it. But it is disappointing that Apple's manufacturing system let this happen. I believe there are some truly brighter iPhone 7 Pluses out there. A friend visited from the U.S. and his seemed to be much brighter than mine.

But Apple advertising that it is brighter than previous models just isn't true.

Keep returning it over, and over, and over, and over. . . .

I had to return so many that it is ridiculous. I finally found a good one. Between "backlight bleed" and "yellow screen," it's difficult to find a good one. It is going to take LOTS of people returning these things before Apple gets their QC together. As much as we pay as a "premium" for these phones demands that we should get pristine goods.

Some of the phones that were sent to me would not even qualify as passable for a "refurbished" phone in my opinion.

As an aside, my Wife has gotten an iPhone 7 and I'm having to do the same process with hers. We've been through 4 already. I simply am not willing to let Apple pass on giving us crap like this. Don't go through apple care. Simply return the phone within your 14 days and buy a new one. No hassle, no headache.

I received a call from the Apple liaison today and the final conclusion is that as far as Apple is concerned that's just the way they are.

They admit there is a variation in the phones during manufacture, but they aren't willing to continue to exchange phones until we find one that is as bright and noticeably more vibrant and brilliant as advertised - or even as bright as the iPhone 7 Plus my friend from the U.S. has, which we compared side-by-side during his visit here to Japan.

However, Apple are willing to let me think about it for a week or so and even though I bought it from my carrier, Softbank, and even though Softbank does not allow returns and refunds, Apple would be willing to let me sell the phone to Apple for the full retail price and I could just buy another cell phone with the carrier. In other words, they are offering me a way out, if I decide I want to do that.

So I will think about it.

I'm of course disappointed with Apple and with the quality of the screen. And the logic of the engineering team bewilders me. They are advertising one thing and selling another. It's clear to anybody who looks at my side-by-side photos, which compare the iPhone 7 Plus and my iPhone 6 Plus displays. It's even more obvious in person. The Apple Store people who have seen it also agree. 100% of everybody who sees the two iPhones side-by-side agree the iPhone 6 Plus is the one that is brighter.

So I will think about exactly how much this bothers me for a bit. I'll see what my carrier offers. Perhaps an iPhone 6S Plus if I decide to stick with Apple. Or maybe it's time to look into Android substitutes.

Since Apple is offering a complete refund of the full purchase price, I suppose I will remain an Apple customer for now. But I certainly wouldn't buy anything else from Apple again unless it was clear there was a full money-back guarantee from the start. I don't want to go through this experience again.

I guess that is the end of my story. I hope other people have better luck than I did with their iPhone 7 Pluses. And I hope Apple reconsiders the way they advertise the iPhone 7 Plus screen. Because what they are advertising just is not what you get.

This is just disgusting. If Apple cannot produce units which are uniform, they should keep swapping out until YOU (the paying customer) get one which which is identical to that which Apple represents it is selling. I still stand by my original assertion--buy direct through Apple and pay in full (no carriers, no contracts, etc.). It is far easier to return that way.

Your pictures, by the way, are awful. I don't see how any reasonable person can say that either of your two iPhone 7 units have a better screen that your old iPhone 6. That is just ridiculous.

Feb 4, 2017 5:32 PM in response to Nick776

I agree completely. I'm very disappointed with Apple. I think they should do the swapping out there. They should find an iPhone 6 Plus and then open up as many iPhone 7 Plus boxes as needed until they find one that is brighter and "more brilliant and vibrant" and send me that.

One thing I'm considering is take the refund and go to the Apple store and do that there. And if I can't find one - maybe the Japan models are all manufactured poorly - switch to some Android phone and be done with Apple. That would be sad to do after all these years, but it is so frustrating.

It looks Ok on this picture, but look at it side by side on a white background (such as the email app) and it will quickly become apparent how "off" it is. Apple suggested this crap-fix to me, too. I am just not buying it. Hold a luminance meeter over the two screens on a solid white picture if you really want to understand the difference.

It makes me angry that Apple suggests "fixes" like this when they absolutely know it is not a "fix" at all. It is more of an optical illusion than anything else (actually it is just that--an optical illusion).
