Giving away our old Mac book pro to our son for use in school. Wiped the computer and now trying to re-install Mountain Lion (which the machine came with) , but every time we enter our apple ID and username to start the process, it either says "session has timed out' or Item is not available at the moment'. We are not sure how to proceed from here. Any advice?

Thank you, however, it doesn't give us a choice - as soon as we click install it attempts to connect to app store - which it doesn't do - and asks for Apple ID and Password - then comes back with a "Topic is not available" message. Maybe we haven't wiped it properly. Will keep trying. Thanks again!
If you aren't doing do already, try booting into Internet Recovery (command - option/alt - R on a restart). It is a very slow boot and a slow install.
