Re-installing Mountain Lion OS

Giving away our old Mac book pro to our son for use in school. Wiped the computer and now trying to re-install Mountain Lion (which the machine came with) , but every time we enter our apple ID and username to start the process, it either says "session has timed out' or Item is not available at the moment'. We are not sure how to proceed from here. Any advice?
