Q: Why are my iPhotos being deleted...

...on my Macbook Pro when I delete them from my iPhone 5s? I have been uploading my photos from my phone to my laptop so that I can delete the originals on my phone and open up space. However after I went through my phone and deleted all of my images, and reopened iPhoto on my laptop, all of my photos and videos were gone! I'm more than a little ****** due to the fact that I had pictures and videos of my daughter as a baby on there. I had done my research after seeing this problem, and according to apple threads, all I needed to do was import my photos to my laptop and then that should have been the end of it. I also saw that as I deleted photos from my phone, it would delete them from my iCloud as well. Has anybody else encountered this problem? Any suggestions as to how I can avoid this in the future? Thanks all!

Lets start with accurate facts - what version of he OS and of iPhoto which you actually ask about or of Photos which it sounds like you may really have? And if you are using Photos instead of iPhoto what are your iCloud settings on each device

If you are using iCloud Photo Library (not available with iPhoto at all) then all changes (additions, deletions or edits) made on any device are made on all devices - for devices with limited storage you use optimized photos rather than deleting

Thanks for getting back to me!

I am using OSX EL Cap version 10.11 on my Macbook. You are correct in calling out that my issue is actually with Photos, not iPhoto. I am using Version 1.1 (335.4.0). I have been using iCloud photo library, which explains why they were deleted from there when deleting from my phone, however with Photos I was importing the images directly from my phone via the USB cable.

    Thanks again for your help!

Also, I have Photos turned on under iCloud on my phone, however i have iCloud Drive turned off as I was originally just uploading all of my materials via the USB. Does that help at all?

    yes

    a couple things

you are behind on updates - the current software is OS X 10.11.6 and Photos 1.5 - getting up to date would be good

and we need the iCloud settings on the IOS devices and on the Mac  --  there are three services - iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Drive and iCloud Photo sharing - we need the settings of each service on each device

and  I think this explains what you need but I am not sure

If you are using iCloud Photo Library (not available with iPhoto at all) then all changes (additions, deletions or edits) made on any device are made on all devices - for devices with limited storage you use optimized photos rather than deleting

When you use ICPL you can  not also do a USB import - one or the other
