Turn off calculator keyboard sound iOS 10

How do you turn off keyboard click sounds in the calculator? "Keyboard Clicks" is OFF in Settings.

iPhone 6, iOS 10

Hi marcwalters - thanks for raising this topic 🙂

Having read most of the discussion, I understand how Apple came to tinker with the iOS Calculator UI feedback, but personally find any key clicks really annoying. Hopefully with a wave of feedback the issue might get some attention.

I sent the feedback below as an Enhancement Request to apple.com/feedback/iphone.html - also referencing this discussion.

I included the note about my iOS version because on the feedback page the iOS version dropdown list below the 'Comments' dialogue box doesn't yet include "iOS 10.2". Feel free to copy /modifiy and send:

Note:'Which version of iOS are you using? dropdown list' is missing mine: iOS 10.2

Reading the following user discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7670355?start=0&tstart=0

I'm given to understand that IOS Calculator Keyboard Clicks were recently made 'un-mutable', in order to ensure some UI-feedback, to reduce likelihood of a user unintentionally double-tapping keys.

That's useful, until I need to use my iPhone calculator as quietly as possible for the benefit of other people around me - or indeed my own sanity.

Please consider implementing a separate ON/OFF switch for Calculator Keyboard Clicks in Settings > Sounds. By not providing such functionality and considering Keyboard Clicks themselves CAN still be muted, an inconsistency has been introduced into the UI experience.

They do. It's called beta testing. You're free to participate:

https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

The thing you seem to be forgetting is that, just because you don't like a feature, that doesn't mean that it wasn't a carefully considered, carefully tested decision.

It sounds as if you have larger problems than the calculator. You might want to repost this in

iPhone Accessories

That's where I believe I've seen most of the posts about issues with connected hearing aids.

You might also want to see if the manufacturer of your hearing aids offers a support website. They may also have user forums where you might find assistance from other people who have used the same type of device with their iPhones.

Best of luck.

Actually, Apple is not "listening" to this thread. They listen to https://apple.com/feedback. But not Apple Support Communities, which is a user-to-user forum.

So you say you it is preferable to pay hundreds of dollars for a different device, than 99¢ (or less) for one of the hundred or so other downloadable calculators. I'm glad that money means nothing to you.

I assume you mean that you're surprised? If so, why? This is a user-to-user forum. Apple's direct participation is minimal. That was explained in the TOU to which you agreed. I'm also not sure where you're getting the figure that 2000+ people pushed the anything. I also assume by "me to" butt, you mean the "I have this question, too" button.

Information on how to let Apple know how you feel has already been provided.

No, it's an attempt to make sure that I understand what you're saying.

And apple does know about unresolved problems being discussed on its own secure "ID required" discussion board

I didn't say they don't know what's going on. I said they don't participate. The only Apple employees who regularly participate in the forums are the Hosts (purple apple avatar) who are here to make sure that we adhere to the terms of use and who rarely post and the Community Specialists (black apple avatar) who answer certain basic questions that have gone unanswered and which can be answered by links to support articles. Engineers and developers do not respond to issues. And, for what it's worth, two thousand people is a statistically insignificant number of iPhone users.

Submit your feedback. Use a different app. Put the phone on mute.

I just discovered another good reason to be able to silence Calculator Keyboard clicks, although this might be considered a bug in its own right:

When my iPhone is connected to a bluetooth speaker the Calculator Keyboard clicks can be heard coming from that (external) speaker.

Conversely, when my iPhone is connected to an Airplay speaker, the click sounds are heard only from the iPhone speaker.

There's some anecdotal evidence that it does. The most recent example is that, in a recent update, Apple made it possible, for the first time, to turn Voice Control and Siri off for the first time ever. It seemed pretty clear that the good folks at Apple didn't think it was necessary to turn them both off. However, a lot of people complained on these forums and were encouraged to submit feedback. It's possible that wasn't the reason but it seems likely.

Best of luck.

Forget about apple fixing it - they have so many problems with their ios from v9 that the calculator would be at the bottom of their long list - go to apple store and download the free "calculator HD" which has the both basic and scientific screens. Use it until "it just DOESN"T work" (which is the new apple "catch cry" on the coal face) gets their act together and stops using its loyal customer database to find their software faults. I have sent feedback to apple to ask them to fix this annoyance and asked them why they always take 1 step forward and 2 steps back by not testing their software fully. They make millions of dollars but can't afford to test their software - doesn't make sense. They could use a trial period with any new ios update with a group of users - that can be tested before releasing on mass to the unsuspecting public. I know so many apple users who no longer trust the apple ios updates and are refusing to update for fear of bricking their phones or having an important facility of the iPhone which they use in their business completely made unusable. Bring back Steve Jobs - at least he could say "it just works" with confidence.

I'm talking about a large group of testers that apple instigates and supplies the various models of iphones to use - not a test using my valuable phone - cannot risk that as I use my phone for business and cannot afford it to be usuable because of a beta test. They would have soon picked up on the calculator sound annoyance change which could of instgated a volume on/off setting specifically for the calculator

Many thousands of people participate in the public beta. And that's only the final beta. Again, just because you don't like a feature doesn't mean that it wasn't carefully considered and tested.

Apple is not known for giving extensive options. Mr. Jobs, especially, didn't think that the customer knows best. However, since the death of Mr. Jobs, the seem to be willing to give a few more choices. Submit your feedback. However, as it seems that adding sounds to the calculator was probably a carefully considered decision, it might be a while before things change.

Jan 26, 2017 7:43 AM in response to hairy_kiwi

The problem I'm having with Bluetooth is that after every time I open the calculator app, it links to my Bluetooth hearing aids and every time I open the phone, my Bluetooth link comes on to my hearing aid streamer. I have to Shut my phone down and reboot every time so that my hearing aids won't link up when I open my phone.

This is the classic "lets change something to make it new" (though the thing was already perfect)

When Apple releases a new iOS they add a claim saying "ios 10, more than 100 new features" well if you read the "new feature release" note you will find things like "calculator nlw has a click sound when typing"

Yes, as sad as it sounds

Jan 29, 2017 4:01 PM in response to guguii

It was definitely NOT perfect. The evidence is the hundreds of people who have posted in these forums over the years that the calculator made mistakes. There are some calculations where the answer is the same as the last value entered (e.g, for a trivial example, 4/2). When users see this some think the operation didn't happen, and press = again, thus doing an additional calculation and producing a wrong answer. Adding key clicks provides needed feedback that a key was pressed.
