Q: Add Ringtones to Messages on My iMac

Is there a way to add text tones to the list in Messages on the iMac like you can on your mobile devices?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

    Hi,

Oh, you wanted to know how ?

    You need this file.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-18 at 20.46.02.png

That is the path across the bottom of the window.

Hard Drive Name/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneLibrary.framework (there is an Alias to the Resources here) which takes you to the Versions/A/Resources folder.

You then need to have the Ringtones folder.

Add the Sounds you want (You may need to check the format used)

Got there, but it shows read only in the info window under permissions, so I cannot add anything to the folder. I do have admin privileges on this computer.

    Hi,

I have migrated my User account across two computer and several version of the Mac OS X versions.

iChat (Lion and prior) used to read the System Alert list, the iChat sounds that were not quite as hidden as the Tone Library AND also read the ~/Library/Sounds folder.

As my account has bee migrated I still have a ~/Library/Sounds folder and did try putting an Alias of that folder into the Ringtones one.

I had thought it just did not like the Alias and presumed it would ask for the Password and allow actual files to be moved there.

There are probably was using the Root Login  where this can be done (It's not something I do myself and I tend to regard it as a bit more than most people are willing to do).

There is probably a way using Terminal as well.

The other option would be to use AppleScript.

I had logged in as root and still got the message that I did not have permission to do it, so I guess I am out of luck on this one. Too bad. I am not crazy about their choices and have a lot of really good ones I did.

Thanks. More Security! I will try this, but it sounds like it should work. At least explains the permission problems.
