Q: After update to iOS 10, faces no longer synchronising

I Have spent many months organising my 19000 photos with Apple Photos, including all faces. On iOS 9 I could not see the faces album, but I could search for faces. So my tagging worked for my iMac, and synchronised to both my iPad and iPhone.

I Have now installed iOS 10, and I am unable to search the faces I have spent so many months painstakingly tagging. Now I have a "person" album, but as far as I can see, I have to start naming the faces from scratch on both iPhone and iPad. I started with my wife on my iPad, and found her identified as more than 50 people. So I had to merge these and then name them. And that is just my wife. Now it seems that I have to repeat this for all the faces, and then do the same thing on my iPhone, as it appears that my work on the iPad will not be synchronised. And when my iPhone 7 plus arrives - shall I have to start all over again?

I Hope I am missing something important, because otherwise I am having difficulty believing this. I have read that it has to do with privacy matters, but that did not seem to be a problem with iOS 9. Even if it is a valid consideration, I feel that I should at least have the choice to synchronise or not.

Searching for faces is one of the most important filters in my photo archive. Now it looks as if the amount of work I shall have to do to be able to access this filter on all devices has suddenly been increasd drastically. Certainly if the faces will not be carried over from one device to its replacement.

To put it softly, I am not amused, and hope against hope that one of my readers will be able to point out how wrong I am, and how it should be done. In the meantime, it may be an idea to put the name in the description field instead of, or in addition to,  a face in photos on the iMac, as this information does synchronise (and is not a privacy problem???)

Has the faces scan finished on your iPhone? You should see a notice, when you open th People album.

The iPhone user guide iOS 10 says: http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/#/iph9c7ee918c

Photos scans your photo library for people’s faces and adds the most frequently found faces to the People album. You can assign names to the people Photos finds, add people who appear less frequently, mark people as favorites, and view memories that contain specific people. The more photos you have, the longer the first scan takes.

People are synced among devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID.

So the detected people should be synced between devices.

Thank you, Léonie, that was certainly helpful. And indeed this morning the faces I identified yesterday on my iPad are appearing on my iPhone. I can imagine that my collection of 19000 photos might take some time to scan. So that is one big relief for me.

What is not clear to me yet is the synchronisation of faces with my iMac, as faces that I identified there are not yet identified on the iPad. Maybe that is a question of time, and I can also imagine that it could be solved when I upgrade to Sierra this week. Do you have any knowledge about that? I shall be patient for a while; maybe I was getting wound up for no reason.

Thanks again for your help so far.

We will be able to talk about Sierra once it has been released. We are not allowed to talk about pre-release Apple software in Apple's own forums

The User Guide promises that people will sync across devices, (http://help.apple.com/ipad/10/#/iPada1053653) but it is not clear yet, if people will sync between Macs and iOS devices.  We'll know next week.

I don't invest much work into naming people on my iPhone, until all devices are using fully compatible versions of Photos.

Clear enough, Leonie, I'll follow your lead on that one.
