Q: Guest network has no internet connection on Time Capsule with Bt Home Hub?

I have a bt home hub of which I have connected my Airport Extreme Time Capsule via ethernet. The main wifi network offered by the AE works as expected, I can connect my devices to it and they can access the internet and backup as they should.

When I create and turn on the guest network though, devices can connect to it but it doesn't have an internet connection, from reading the forums it may be down to the AE router bring in Off/Bridge state or to do with the fact that the home hub isn't just a modem but a router as well.

This is driving me crazy and I cant seem to resolve it, any help would be greatly appreciated

The Home Hub is both a modem and a router or gateway device. As such, if both the Home Hub and Time Capsule are in their respective default configurations, both would be providing routing functions, i.e. NAT and DHCP services. This would lead to a double NAT condition. Normally to resolve this, you would reconfigure the downstream router (the TC in this case) as a bridge ... but the Guest networking feature of the TC will be disabled as well.

The HomeHub is a modem/router, meaning that it is actually two devices.....a modem and a router in one package.  Some providers call this a gateway.

The Guest Network feature on the AirPort routers is designed to work with a simple modem......not a modem/router or gateway.

It might be possible to activate the Guest Network feature on the AirPort with a HomeHub, but you will have to change the router mode setting on the AirPort from "Off (Bridge Mode)" to DHCP and NAT.  Unfortunately when you do this, you will have two routers both trying to control the same network, which can lead to IP address conflicts and unpredictable problems due to a Double NAT situation on your network.

I'm not recommending that you try to run a Double NAT on your network, but it is the only way that the Guest Network feature might work when used with a modem/router or gateway like a HomeHub.
