Q: Must let MacBook Pro sit between boots for it to turn on?

I need help with a problem that began yesterday. It was especially hot in my room, so it's possible it could have overheated, which was a stated problem when I bought the mac used. Yesterday I left my laptop (MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2010) in my room for not too long, however when I returned I tried to use it and it seemed the laptop was frozen! What's weird is that the cursor would move around, however anything I clicked on, nothing happened and nothing was responding.

From there, I held the power button until it shut off and then I immediately turned it back on. After it chimed, I realized it had the white screen of death! Over and over from then I kept turning it back on and waiting to see if it booted, which all resulted in the white screen of death! (No logo, nothing!) I tried all the recommended commands, such as Command+R, option, option+R, Holding D, holding C, shift, resetting SMC and PRAM/VRAM, and nothing responded.

Occasionally however it did come on, which I would then shut down correctly and try to turn it back on, which it would always result in the white screen still. Now, when it did come on it would work PERFECTLY, so I'm pretty sure the SSD isn't messed up or the logic board. I called a couple Apple Representatives and was advised to reinstall the OS, so this morning I erased the Hard Drive and reinstalled OS X El Capitan. I also clicked repair on the drive a few times and it said no problems from the drive every time.

After the reset, it still has the screen sometimes. What I have determined now, is that no matter how hot it gets, when I shut it down, it will always boot up to the white screen of death, unless I wait ~10 minutes between boots. I'm just glad that it actually works, but it's pretty inconvenient to have to wait time between boots unless I just leave the computer on for a while. If anyone has any information on this that's be great...

Also, I've had this MacBook for 8 days and it has worked perfectly until yesterday... Thanks!!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I'm afraid you have your answer with this statement alone. Chances are good that the original owner had a problem with this MacBook Pro and was unable to resolve it. My recommendation, at this point, is to return it and get your money back.

When a Mac is only booting up to a white/gray/black screen without the Apple Logo on it, it can be for one or more of the following reasons:

    • Hardware failure
    • Startup drive is not recognized as valid and bootable
    • Essential OS X software is missing, incorrectly moved or renamed, or corrupt
    • A firmware update is needed

I'm venturing to guess that is the first item in the list.

Since you have a pre-2013 Mac, you can try to run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) to see if it uncovers any issues. To do so, hold down the D key immediately after you hear the boot chime. Continue to hold it down until you see the AHT screen.

Hello, I tried holding D, however I realized I held it before the chime played and now the boot chime no longer plays? However my laptop did boot up after letting sit it again.

OK, so after turning it off and letting it sit, it did come on and now the chime is back. Now that I have turned it on, I tried restarting it and it came back on automatically! What I've learned is that if I restart my mac it will load, but if I shut it down and then reload it, I must let it sit first. Do you of any reasons that could possibly call this?

Yes, you bought a laptop that has hardware issues, potentially a main board with a faulty component. Again, I suggest that you return it and get your money back.
