Q: imovie crashing

Hello.

I am having an issue with iMovie crashing. This started occurring when I tried to import a large file into iMovie. When it occurred repeatedly, I tried updating and am now running 10.1.2. I have the bulk of my library on an external drive, but this all started happening without that library attached. I can't open the library on my external drive or on my laptop without it crashing.

I have a macbook pro mid 2010, now running El Capitan version 10.11.6

I am wondering if I need to uninstall iMovie on my laptop and reinstall. I won't lose too much material sense most of it is on my external drive.

Thanks for your help!

Before reinstalling iMovie open it with the command and option keys held down and select to delete preferences. Also make sure your EHD is formatted MAC OS Extended journaled. As a test you can also create a new library, add some clips and see if that works ok.

Thanks so much! That did allow me to keep iMovie open which is awesome. I also checked to see if my EHD was MAC OS Extended journaled and it is. I am finding that since I had update iMovie on my laptop last week while trying to solve this, that I now have some of my library on the EHD that is missing media. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated, I have two libraries on there and one of them asked if I wanted to update files and I said yes. The other library, just said there was a problem and did I want to continue. I did, but then found several events that weren't showing any files.

Thank you for your help and your suggestions. I think that solved the crashing problem and hopefully I can retrieve other files!

Since a new library works ok it seems the library you were previously trying to open is corrupted. Was it the one that did not update? I assume the missing media is in the library that did not update. If that is the case then what you can do is open that library by right clicking on it in finder and selecting show package contents from the dropdown menu. Find the folder called original media. It will be in a folder named for the project and will contain your media files. Copy them (option drag) to the desktop and import to iMovie. Hopefully that will be your missing media.
