I think most people are talking about the Up Next widget. Anytime an event is created as "all day", that event does NOT show up on the Widget or as a pop up reminder. The only way I have been able to work around this is by setting a specific time for the event (birthday). If my son's birthday is April 1st, instead of making it an all day event, I had to change it to 8am. Then I put in a reminder alert for 1 week before and 1 hr before and now it shows up in the Up Next Widget. That goes for ANY event that is created for ALL DAY. ALL Day events/birthdays should still be showing up on the widget but they don't.

It needs fixed.

Just a quick note to let you know what helped in my case: I suddenly wasn’t getting birthday reminders on my iPhone (latest version of iOS 10). It was set to "on day of event (9:00)" as shown in isurusams screenshot. Changing it there did not help, the reminders did not come. But they did reliable on my Mac (macOS 10.12.3). There I had it set to "1 day before" and decided to change it to "on day of event". Right after doint this the reminders on my iPhone started working again. Now both devices remind me on the same day at 9:00. It might be necessary to uncheck this:

Hi Ghauthaman,

I understand that you are not seeing birthday events in the calendar widget on your iPhone in iOS 10. I know it's important to stay up to date with these important events, so I'm happy to help.

Check out the steps here to modify how the Calendar can show you notifications:

Use multiple calendars - iPhone
Change how Calendar notifies you. Go to Settings > Notifications > Calendar. You can change notification styles for invitations, events found in apps, upcoming events, and more.

If you're still not seeing these specific birthday alerts, then try checking the settings specifically for that calendar.

How to modify the calendar alerts on a per calendar basis:
  1. Open the Calendar app
  2. Tap Calendars in the bottom middle of the app
  3. Tap the i to the right of the Birthdays calendar
  4. Ensure that the option for Allow events on this calendar to display alerts is turned on
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

Today is my friend birthday and tomorrow is my girlfriend's. However I do not see anything in the Calendar or Up Next Widget. This is my first time using iOS, switched from Android. The Google Calendar on Android does allow you to set both alert/reminder and it always show up in its widget. I have missed birthday wishes for some of my friends though I already set it in contacts. They don't make it public on Facebook so I have to set in the phone to remind me about that. It is really sad, I even checked with Genius Bar in Apple Store but look like they ain't know the answer, too. Want to get this fix ASAP.
