Q: Rest Finger to Open isn't working

I am very concerned about wearing out the home button on my iphone 6s so I set to "Rest Finger to Open" but it's not working? Am I supposed to do something else?

iPhone 6s, iOS 10

Just to clarify -- when you say it isn't working you may want to reply with more details.

If the phone is locked you need to physically depress either the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button and then rest your finger on the Home button. If you physically depress the Home button it should both wake and unlock the phone in virtually one step as the press wakes the phone and the finger being on that button almost immediately reads the touch id and unlocks the phone. Note that before iOS 10 a physical press of one of the buttons was also required.

Sorry to not give enough information. I can "wake" the phone up and then I can "press home to open." That works.

I know the iphone 7 supposedly has a new home button that will never wear out. But I have a 6s. I'm concerned because with the new iOS 10 I'm constantly using the home button to open the phone. That home button is sure to wear out.

I read about how I can set the home button to "rest finger to open" and I can, after "waking" the phone, just rest my finger on the home button to open my phone. In the settings I turned on "rest finger to open" but it's not working. Is there something else I have to do?

There isn't anything else you need to do -- that is how it works and once you have changed that setting to "rest finger to open" it works the same way that it did before iOS 10. Even with iOS 9 if the phone was locked, you had to physically depress some button (either the sleep/wake or the home button). With iOS 10 and rest finger to open turned on you also need to physically depress one of those buttons. There is no more wear on the home button that there ever was.

If you are like me (and it sounds like you are in this case) once you have upgraded it is easy to forget exactly how something used to work. With iOS 9, if the phone was locked you couldn't wake it without physically depressing a button. I usually did it by physically depressing the home button and with touch id turned on it also then immediately scanned my finger; with rest finger to open turned on it does the same thing in iOS 10. In both cases the home button is physically depressed one time.

Aha! The key phrase is "with touch ID turned on." I don't use touch ID. Thanks for the help FoxFifth.

I don't have "REST FINGER TO OPEN" option

    ios 10, iphone 5

I don't want to use the home button every time to use my phone.

I don't want the information shown when opening my phone, news, maps, etc.

Am I the only one without "rest finger to open"?

I'm in the screen, Home button, Default, Slow, & Slowest.

    I scrolled down.

I do not have a switch for "rest finger to open".

    Can anyone help?

You would not have that option because the iPhone 5 does not have Touch ID. That option is for devices with Touch ID.

I have it set so I have raise to unlock on, so when I raise my phone, and have my finger on touch ID, it unlocks it without having to wear out the home button. Hope this helped.

I had the same problem, and the thing was that I disabled Touch ID – that was the reason.

I Have a IPhone 5s Ios 10.0.2, and my Rest Finger To Unlock is activated but I rest my finger on my home button and it doesn't work.

This is true for my older ipad as well.  However, is the option of swiping completely gone now?  I'd like to still swipe (my son using the ipad as well).  Is there any way of setting it back?

No there isn't. That is the way it is now. You can provide feedback to Apple if you wish to see it change. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

However, given the fact that screens have changed, I don't think it will change, but that is my opinion.
