Q: mail account

Greetings i have my apple id exactly the same as my hotmail email account... I can get my hotmail emails in my iPhone but for some reason it shows up on my macbook but doesn't display the messages. When I tried to add the hotmail account it says "account already exists"....

Any advice?

    Hey arrmixer,

If you are unable to re add the Hotmail account in your Mail app on your Macintosh, it might be due to the Hotmail email address being used as the Apple ID in the iCloud settings. I would open your System preferences and select the iCloud settings. If the Mail setting is not checked, place a check mark in the box so your Mail app will start getting the messages. If it is checked there, you will need to sign out iCloud temporarily to remove the hotmail email address from iCloud. Also, remove the Hotmail account from the Mail app so no traces of the Hotmail account will be on the Mac.

After the account is fully removed, you can sign back into your iCloud settings using the Hotmail email address, then select all of the features that you wish to be synced including Mail. This will automatically add the Hotmail account to your email app. Have a quick look at the links below for assistance with resolving your issue.

OS X El Capitan: Change iCloud feature settings

If you would like to save your emails before removing the account completely from your Mac, you can  export the mailbox then import them once you successfully re add the account.

Mail (El Capitan): Import or export mailboxes

Mail (El Capitan): Set up Mail with your email accounts

    Remove an account
When you remove an email account from Mail, the account’s messages are deleted and no longer available on your Mac. Copies of messages remain on the account’s mail server and are still available (from webmail, for example).

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities to post your question. This should resolve the issue you are currently facing with your Hotmail account.

    Have a great day.
