What are you trying to accomplish?

Single user mode is a shell capable of running when things on the hardware are experiencing problems.

It is a not a fully functioning shell, it is meant for trouble shooting problems.

Terminal on the other hand maybe what you are looking to explore. There are many resources ex http://blog.teamtreehouse.com/introduction-to-the-mac-os-x-command-line

Single User Mode is rarely used to do any Mac repairs.  Single User Mode is rarely used on "ANY" Unix system (speaking as someone that has been professionally working with Unix systems since the mid-80's and for fun Mac OS X from the early 2000's).

Command line commands via a Terminal interface is more commonly used by Unix geeks, but most Mac problems do not need the Terminal.  In some cases a problem that can be solved via the Terminal can also be solved via a graphical user interface.

If for some reason you really want to play on the command line, then there are books out there that can help give you the basics of Bash (the command line shell that controls syntax).  There are books on using the Mac OS X Unix interface which is specific to Mac OS X vs other Unix platforms.

There are also books on Mac OS X trouble shooting.

Plus you can spend time reading these forms where different gems will be given out.

Strongly suggest you maintain backups, because to learn, you are going to want to play, and playing has a very good chance of breaking something.  Up-to-date backups will protect you from yourself.  Or have a virtual machine running a version of OS X that you can destroy and then rebuild.  Or just another Mac to experiment on.
