Q: iPhone 7 Hissing Sound

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if any of you started noticing the hissing sound from the iPhone 7??

This happening usually while watching videos, games. Basically when the phone is at peak power.  My guess is that sound is a fan equivalent in the Mac but it made me curious.

iOS 10

I found this article reporting others that hear this:

    https://9to5mac.com/2016/09/17/iphone-7-plus-hissing/

I have an iPhone 7 and have not noticed this ... but perhaps I haven't stressed the device as much as other users.  I have watched videos and played games, but not games with very extensive graphics.

There is a 9to5Mac article about this issue. It is unclear at this point why it would be happening (beyond the obvious), it may be normal or it could possibly be a defect. I would contact Apple Support about it to see if they know anything about this. At a minimum, Apple will at least become aware of an issue (if there is one) if people report it.

Apple support was asking me the below  questions, I'm guessing there is nothing wrong with the hardware but the sound it self is so weird

We'd like to look into this with you. A few questions for you first:

Did this start the first time you played a game?

Is this only happening with one game or many?

Does the sound you're hearing occur when you're listening to music or watching videos?

Does this happen only from the speakers or can you hear it when using headphones as well?

Is it a consistent hissing sound or does it fade in and out?

My iPhone 7 is affected. The best problem is when take a video in quiet ambients.

Try this: record a video in a quiet room. The hissing sound is recorded and very noticeable when you watch the video.

Quick question - Did you try to do a reset of the phone ?

Though its clearly a hardware issue, apple support wanted to do a 'reset all settings' routine to check if it's a software or a hardware issue that's causing this problem.

Reset and restore and the problem isn't solved.

I just chat with the Apple Support and the answer is: Go to an Apple Store and request a replacement.

Yeah it's happening to mine as well. And contrary to what originalname022 says the problem isn't solved.

In my case it didn't go to the point of replacement. They want me to speak to a senior advisor

"Thanks for the information. We’ve created a case and we’d like to pair you with a senior advisor and schedule a callback for you. The advisor that contacts you will work with you to determine the next best steps."

    True,

I hit silver by accident, and I cannot undo it. I will get back to you guys once I hear what the senior advisor has to say.

Based on what people have been posting to this thread and the article sberman and I have posted links to, it seems like Apple is still trying to figure out exactly what the issue is and if it needs to be solved. It's possible that the hissing noise is a completely normal part of the A10 Fusion processor at high performance and it's also possible that it isn't. If it turns out that it is normal, Apple will likely publicly address the issue in some way. If not, that is what Apple's support team is for, so users can have properly working devices. The reason I suggested that people contact Apple Support is so that Apple can be informed of any potential issues, as posting here won't get Apple's attention at all.

If it was "normal" than wouldn't it be happening to everyone iPhone 7?

Not necessarily since everyone uses their devices differently. I'm also not suggesting that it is normal. If you are experiencing this, you should contact Apple Support as it could potentially be a defect. Nobody posting here will be able to definitively tell you if it's normal or not until Apple does.

    Hi Again,

I apologize if something i said was offensive. I myself completely agree that it can be normal, i just want to be careful that it is nothing serious. You are right, Apple is looking into this issue, and posting here was not for attention, it was to discuss what the other fellow users in the Apple family are doing to get it rectified. I have been using iPhones every iteration since the iPhone 5, so i know its a good piece of hardware.

In many places phones are being replaced, it doesn't bother me if they replace it or not, i just want to have a piece of mind that it's safe to use. Like we all discusses before, it can just be a fan like mechanism. Anyway, tomorrow is my call with Apple senior rep, will update it here.

This discussion was not opened to drag Apple's attention in anyway, the best company out there which with exceptional customer satisfaction so i know I'm in good hands.

No worries. I wasn't trying to be argumentative. I was trying to make it more clear to anyone who thinks this issue is solved that they should contact Apple regardless of if they believe it is normal or a defect. I am genuinely curious about what the outcome of this will be, so I am still following this discussion and I hope more users post about their experiences with it.
