Sep 17, 2016 3:41 PM in response to quinlan carnegieby Jim Wanamaker,What version of iMovie are you using? What are the specs on the audio you are adding to your movie. MP3 can sometimes be a problem. AIFF, AAC or WAV work the best. Have you tried more than one particular song. Are you using the audio tab to select your music? Does iMovie crash when adding background music and also adding to a clip?

Sep 23, 2016 5:37 PM in response to quinlan carnegieby Jim Wanamaker,Since you are using the audio tab presumably your songs are in iTunes. You can select your song in iTunes and get info on it using command i. What OS are you using? iMovie 9 is not fully compatible with El Capitan or Sierra. Most of the issues reported relate to video problems not audio but it's possible that there are audio issues as well. I understand you have already deleted iMovie preferences with no result so I would try a new project. You might try deleting preferences by opening iMovie holding down the command and option keys. Another thing you can try is to open iMovie holding down the option key and create a new library and see if that works. If none of this solves the problem I would reinstall iMovie.
