My iPad can't update to iOS 10

For months, I've been trying to update my iPad Air 2's iOS. It's currently on iOS 9.3.3. It may be an issue with my iOS 9 Beta Software Profile (which I have uninstalled a few days ago) but I'm not really sure. I repeatedly get "Unable to Install Update" errors when I try updating over the air, and sometimes my iPad even crashes and restarts.

I try to update via iTunes and iTunes tells me "This version of the iPad software (9.3.3) is the current version." when it obviously isn't. FYI I use iTunes 12.5.1.21 on my iMac running OS X Mavericks.

Hi C000L,

I understand that you get an error when trying to update your iPad with either iTunes or over the air. I know it's important to have up to date software, so I'm happy to help.

You mentioned that you had the iOS 9 beta installed. If beta software isn't properly updated to the release version, it may cause issues with updating normally. Check out this article about how to manage iOS beta software on your iPhone:

Download the final version of iOS

If you have an iOS beta version and want to download the final version, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your device to iTunes.
  2. While your device is connected, force it to restart. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the Recovery Mode screen.
  3. When asked, choose Update to download and install the latest nonbeta version of iOS.
An update install won't affect your content or settings.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

I am upset about this answer! it does not work and gets you scary messages about losing everything

I did this, as recommended above:

it says I have to update (back to iOS 9.3.5) and if that does not work, restore to factory settings.

I could have done without iOS 10 better than potentially losing all my data.

DON'T DO what they say above! it does NOT work! and it does not get iOS 10, it still just gets 9!

I did not lose any data that I can see right now, but it wasted my time, I still have 9.3.5 and thought i was going to have to restore to factory settings.
