Be sure to follow Apple's care and handling Apple instructions.
They include (within the Apple Watch User Guide > Important handling information and also elsewhere) that your watch, band and skin should be kept clean and dry to prevent long-term damage to the watch.
They also include that the watch and band should be cleaned and dried (instructions below) if they come into contact with any liquids other than water, including sweat, sunscreen and lotions.
