Starting with iOS 10

I'd like to avoid pressing the home button every time I start my iPad. What's the best way to get directly to the main page?

There is no other way than pushing the home button. I find it annoying because I use a device without Touch ID. Apple was so unfriendly to remove the option to let users choose what they preferred. So for people with older devices unlocking has become a greater effort.

The motion is different. I'm not sure I agree it requires greater effort. I do know that getting used to a new motion takes a couple of days.

Apple changed the procedure to unlock in iOS 10. I don't know why, but I can make an educated guess. There have been several hardware hacks that allowed the screen unlock code to be entered via the port on the bottom of the phone, repeatedly until the correct code was found. The FBI apparently used this feature more than once to break into locked phones, and the kit to do it was available on the darknet for about $200. Physically requiring a button push on the phone defeats this hardware hack.

Could also be because swiping left to right now takes you to the widgets page on the lock screen. They needed to make room for that, so they changed the gesture (or button as the case may be) to unlock the device.
