Developing an HomeKit-Device for privat usage only

Hello,

with iOS10 there is also the new HomeKit-App included which made me curious about developing my own HomeKit compatible device. I noticed that you have to get an MFI license in order to develop such devices and sell them. But as far as I can tell, this license is only available for companies.

My question is, whether it is possible to get access to Apples-HomeKit-resources and program my very own HomeKit device - with no intention to sell it commercially. In the best case for free.
