MAC MINI - how do I find out if there is something running or downloading in the background?

Have been on the phone for hours with HughesNet .. they're telling me there is something running in the background, or downloading information. I have a 500 mega"allowance" a day. It's been disappearing even when I am not connected with Safari. How can I stop this? Where do I begin?

Mac mini, iOS 10

I've checked that ... understand I am not very up on these things. The A.M. has a %CPU .. is that the indicator? It keeps "moving". Which column will give me the answer and how do I correct it? Hughes Net is a bear to deal with. I live in the woods, on a dirt road with NO chance of cable/DSL/Fairpoint ever coming my way. I'm in a "hole" so wireless is out, too .. they also say I have a router, which I do NOT. I've seen my data allowance drop 30% when I've not been connected. Thanks for anything you can tell me. I will check wireshark.org ..
