For the average user it is not necessary and convention backups using Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner will be sufficient.

Sep 18, 2016 9:38 AM in response to j.heath3by Roger Wilmut1,The essential thing about RAID is that you need at least two hard disks (or SSDs) to use it. In the most common configuration, the two disks run in parallel, so that everything written to one disk is also written to the other - thus providing you with a fully current backup should one of the disks fail. Another configuration is where incoming data is written to the two disks alternately, thus providing a much quicker read/write. You can do this with any number of disks; except of course one, where the situation doesn't arise.
