Q: iPhone 4 earpiece stopped working? red light glowing?

Today my 6 year old iPhone 4 earpiece stopped working suddenly. When I make calls I can speak and hear on speaker or through a bluetooth device but I cannot hear the person on earpiece. I have tried lot of troubleshooting but all in vain. Things I have tried:

Restarting the device.

Removing sim and re-insert

Reset all settings

Reset network settings

Restore iPhone to original settings

Blowing air in ear piece

Pressing near earpiece

Toggle mute/un mute

I researched online and found some or other of the about solutions worked for many people but none worked for me. The only thing I have left to try is to insert a headphones into my iPhone and remove it and repeat it 8-9 times and people say that will fix the problem. Unfortunately my head phones broke a long time back and I never really used them. So to try that solution I will have to buy them which is total waste of money as i hardly use it or borrow from someone. For now I am stuck with this problem and wondering if there might be something else I can try.

While troubleshooting I noticed that while making a call the red light near the top front facing camera glows on. But if I turn on the speakers or bluetooth device the light turns off. That means it only glows when using the inbuilt ear piece. Is this some sort of warning of damaged earpiece?

    Hi TechApple,

I understand that you are no longer hearing people you are on calls with when using the built in receiver. I know it's nice to not have to use your iPhone in speaker mode all of the time, so I'm happy to help.

You've gone through a lot of great troubleshooting for this issue already, so great job there. Based on your explanation of this issue and the troubleshooting you've done, it appears that your iPhone needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

    Hi becky_s22

Thanks for your reply. Really appreciate your help.

This morning i charged the phone to 100% and suddenly earpiece started working but only lasted for one call. It is now dead again.

You might be correct in saying that my iPhone needs servicing. But I am wondering if it is worth servicing - spending money on a 6 year old device. It is likely going to develop more problems in near future due to it's age and the battery is getting weaker day by day. The OS version is also getting outdated.

    Thanks again for your reply.
