Mid 2012 Macbook Pro w/out Retina incredibly slow

Hello, I'm typing this us for my mother. She has a mid-2012 Macbook pro without retina that is very slow. She recently upgraded to 16gb ram and we are all pretty sure she did it correctly. It beachballs constantly and takes over a minute to launch Safari. The fan is also quite loud now. It is running El Captain. Thank you in advance!
