    Hello Launche,

Thanks for bringing up your question about Restrictions here in the Apple Support Communities. My understanding of your question is that you are modifying the Restrictions, but no changes are noticed. I attempted the same thing on my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 10 and noticed a similar situation. Please allow me the chance to explain how Restrictions is designed to work. I first set my restrictions for Apps, Don't Allow Apps and set it to 4+, which means basically everything rated above 4+ will be blocked from purchase. Then I went into the App Store and the first app that caught my eye was NCIS: Hidden Crimes. This app is rated 12+, and is definitely an app I wouldn’t want my toddler using. This is where Restrictions kicks in. When I tap on NCIS: Hidden Crimes, the Get option is greyed out. Restrictions does not remove all apps, songs, books, etc. from view, but it will prevent purchase, download and install of all apps rated above the setting you choose when you set up restrictions. This is the help article that discuses Restrictions and preventing purchases: Use Restrictions to prevent purchasing on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I checked the help articles about restrictions, and I understand where it can be a bit confusing. In the help article Use Restrictions on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, it states "You can use Restrictions, also known as parental controls, to block or limit specific apps and features on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch." This actually means that apps, features, or services (rated above what you allowed, or if you disabled them completely) may no longer show on the device if Restrictions is turned on and starts blocking them. I also tested this by enabling Restrictions, and turned the slider for Safari to off. When I went back to the home screen, Safari was no longer showing and I could no longer use it.

I hope this helps clear up how Restrictions works. If my understanding of the issue was not accurate to the issue you are experiencing, I will be happy to continue troubleshooting this issue with you. Please include exactly what you steps you took, and what expectations you had for Restrictions, or the certain apps, features, or services you are restricting. Thanks again and have a great rest of your day!

    Hi,

Thanks for following up.  Yes I am aware of how the Restrictions functions work but since transitioning to the iphone 7 and iSO 10.0.1 the Disable apps function (from appearing  on the phone, haven't tested it in the Apple store yet) is no longer working.  So when I select Disable all Apps or 4+ etc... nothing happens.  On my old 6 phone the corresponding apps would disappear from view on the phone.  So I don't know what's happening and why it's not working.  Maybe something in the Cloud transfer.  If I set my phone up as a new phone, everything works but if I restore from my old phone it doesn't work.  Tried "Reset All Settings" and that didn't work either.

Right now I'm using the phone as a new phone and it's working properly however I don't have my old emails, messages, pictures and apps from the old phone.  It's vital for me to have the Disabling Apps feature for the children.  Apple really needs to develop more internal privacy for their devices, maybe a safe mode or allow different user profiles...anything.

    Thanks

    Hello Launche,

Thanks for the reply. I apologize for misunderstanding the exact situation at first. I am glad you were able to get it working properly though. Since you are using the device set up as new and it is working properly, we know the issue was with some data on the device or in the iOS version, which will most likely be saved in your backups. You can manually bring data back using iCloud or iTunes, but do not restore from the backup as you will bring the problem right back in. Once you log back in to iCloud with the same Apple ID that you used previously, all your data saved in iCloud will start repopulating on the device. If you use a different mail account, you can go into Settings > Mail and set up mail again, which will download all your mail from your Email Service Provider, as long as your email account is set up as an IMAP account.

You have the option to sync the old phone with iTunes, and then use iTunes to sync that data over to the new phone. Depending on whether you have a Mac or PC, this option will be in one of these two help articles. If you already have some items on your iPhone, check the articles for a section titled "Keep items from being automatically synced" to prevent items from being removed that are not on your computer yet, and then manually sync the rest of the items to your iPhone.

    1. iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

    2. iTunes 12 for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

If you prefer not to use iTunes to sync everything to the new iPhone, you can also reinstall your past purchases using this help article: Download your past purchases. Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

I'm having this problem, too. I've spent approximately 4 hours on chat and phone with Apple Support today. They wouldn't admit that anyone else is having this issue. They too told me just to set up as new phone, but with hundreds of apps with various sign ins, photos on my phone that don't match the set up on my Mac, etc., it just isn't feasible to set up as a new phone, rather than restoring, every time I get a replacement phone.

Is this truly a known issue affecting a subset of people who upgraded from iPhone 6 to 7 that will be fixed in an update, or is this just some "restore from backup" compatibility issue for which there will not be a fix via update?

    Please help.

I also spent several hours on chat tech support a few days back with no resolution.  Only way around it was to set up as a new phone as well but I too don't think that a feasible option as I too have many, pictures, apps signs in, messages, emails etc... that I'd like to continue using.  I hope there will be a fixed via update.  I'm sure we are not the only two with this issue.

Is there a way to set up as a new phone but somehow properly import the pictures, apps, messages, email etc... into the new phone?

Unfortunately, the AppleCare rep just said I should restore as a new phone. She suggested upgrading icloud storage to bring all of my photos over and manually install my apps (all 244 of them with various log ins and data). It isn't ideal, but I haven't been given any better suggestions. I hope this will get resolved through the next iOs update, but I'm not terribly hopeful about that, as not many users seem to be complaining about this issue...
