Q: iMessages Hacked!

Apple I'm So Upset Right Now!

My iMessages were hacked very early! I woke up to the following email:

Dear,

Your Apple ID was used to sign in to iMessage on an iMac 27" named “iMac11,3”.

Date and Time: September 18, 2016, 12:03 AM PDT

Operating System: OS X 10.8.4

If the information above looks familiar, you can disregard this email.

If you have not recently signed in to an iMac 27" with your Apple ID and believe someone may have accessed your account, go to Apple ID (https://appleid.apple.com) and change your password as soon as possible.

The hacker sent a cramp load of text messages back-to-back to various numbers associated in Beijing, China. I went in immediately, changed all my passwords and reset my iPhone and Macbook.

This is not a settling feeling to know this just happened, Apple!!! What are you guys doing over there? We're paying a crap load of money to stay safe, and I can't even depend on my iMessages staying private without some low life sending text from my iMessages to People in China!!

if somebody send you a phishing mail claiming that you are hacked you should likely ignore it

This kind of thing is the reason Apple sends out emails like that.  So you can stop illicit use of your account as soon as possible.  Often when I log in from a new place, I get that email within 5 minutes.  So far, they have really been me logging in.

There are people out there who have programmed their computers to try password after password, hoping someone has an easy one to get.  Then they use the account for whatever scheme pays for their time.

Almg with changing your AppleID password, you can set up 2-step verification to protect your AppleID and use 2-factor authentication to stop someone signing in using your AppleID on a new device.

Definitely use this if you want to stop it from happening again. This makes your account far more secure, since now the hacker wouldn't be able to simply guess your password - but would be have to also have one of your personal devices with them to receive the authentication code.

Il tuo ID Apple è stato utilizzato per accedere a iMessage con un iMac 27" denominato “iMac11,3”.

    Data e ora: 5 settembre 2016, 14:58 PDT

    Sistema operativo: OS X 10.8.4

    Cordiali saluti,
    Supporto Apple

There is also another email with the Macmini, same hackers.

Which version of iOs do you have?

Why are you upset with Apple? Your account was compromised because you used a weak password and didn't set up 2 factor authentication.

Being upset is quite normal. But the main point is to notify other users (and perhaps Apple) that someone is systematically hacking into imessages. And I think it is a small group of hackers, because the device used are always the same. Either iMac27, MacMini or iPod touch with iOs8 (search for other related threads).

For the 2FA, I just activated it. Although it has been around since 1 year at least, I really didn't know apple had the possibility to do it! Maybe I'm getting old?

previously I just had the normal two-step authentication (with the security questions)

No, there is no large scale hacking of iMessages. If there were, it would be front page news. Most accounts (of any kind) that are compromised were vulnerable due to poor password selection.

I also have the same issue! I woke up Thursday morning to hundreds of iMessages sent from my account all in Chinese characters. I had 2 emails stating that my apple ID had been signed on on 2 different computers. I have changed my password, reset to factory settings, reset network settings, and all kinds of crazy tricks apple has told me to do. My iMessages still don't work. I am very frustrated and concerned on what other information they could possibly have gotten

They could have gotten any information you save in iCloud. Such as iCloud backups, contacts, calendar entries, email addresses....

This happened to me last night as well.  I had what was considered a fairly strong password, mixed case letters, and numbers and special character.  Don't think a strong password will help you.  I will setup 2FA as soon as they let me (I have to wait 2 days for some reason).

Hundreds of messages with Chinese characters (I had a friend tell me that they were advertisements for a casino).

After resetting my password, I am now having trouble getting my 4 devices (all of them) to send iMessages.  Support has been to this point a joke helping me straighten this out.

I have finally gotten my iMessages to work. it took 10 phone calls and asking for a direct supervisor to get it fixed.  they have to disable and remove your phone number from the iMessage program, and then have you sign back into it after doing a network reset.  They did send my issues to the engineers also. Apple claims that's this happens "quite often". I too have added the 2 step verification to my account, after waiting the 3 days they make you wait. I hope this helps! It is very frustrating when you call and no one knows how to fix it, and makes you repeat steps you have already tried..
