Q: Where is JPG file of photo in Photos app

The files for photos recently imported from my iPhone 6 to my Macbook Air do not appear when I search for them.  I need the file for use in an online ad.  For example, I click on a photo and click Get Info, and IMG_1234.jpg is the file name, but when I search in the Finder for that file ("This Mac") it does not appear.

You never directly access the photos in Photos - you use the media browser (scroll down the source pane on the left to media ==> photos ==> Photos) or select the photos in Photos and export (file menu ==> export) to a desktop folder

But I shouldn't have to export a photo to my desktop.  Where is the actual JPG file and why doesn't the Finder find it?  I know Finder used to find them in earlier Macs I've owned.

    Why? Because

You never directly access the photos in Photos - you

1 - use the media browser (scroll down the source pane on the left to media ==> photos ==> Photos)

2 - or select the photos in Photos and export (file menu ==> export) to a desktop folder

Very simple - you do not have to export anything if you use the media browser - you have (as posted) two options

One option you do not have is to use the finder to directly access the photos as that is not the way Photos works - if that is what you want to do then you need to use other software that works like you want - Photos is the wrong software for you

This is very simple: Shouldn't Finder find any file on my computer?  The photos exist as data files, and Finder is unable to locate them.

The files you are looking for are packaged as a part of a package, the Photos Library. They are wrapped as a package to protect them.  A Finder search will find them if you search starting from inside the package; if you open aFinder window of your Photos Library by ctrl-clicking it and using the option "Show Package Contents".  Only, this will be futile, if your Photos Library is an iCloud Photo Library and the files are in iCloud and not on your Mac.

For example - searching the package:

I would only do it, if you need to trouble shoot a problem with the library. The standard ways to access the library pointed out by Larry are less error prone.
