Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding your iPhone 5s has been stuck trying to verify an update for some time now. I know it can be concerning when an update doesn't go as expected. I am happy to help.
First I recommend force restarting your iPhone. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo. If you're still unable to update please try updating with iTunes on a Mac or Pac. Follow the steps below. If you can’t update wirelessly on your iOS device, you can update manually using iTunes on a computer that you trust. If your computer is using Personal Hotspot on the iOS device that you’re updating, connect your computer to a different Wi-Fi or Ethernet network before you update.
- Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
- Connect your device to your computer.
- Open iTunes and select your device.
- Click Summary, then click Check for Update.

- Click Download and Update.
- If asked, enter your passcode. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Have a great day!
