Can I install 8GB of memory in iMac 20 inch (early 2008)?

I have conflicting info from the Apple support site. My system report says the memory is upgradeable but when I looked further, it's recommended to have only 2 X 2GB memory. I'd like to try to upgrade to 8GB without damaging this iMac that still works well. Any tips?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

The maximum RAM for it is 6GB. If it has 8GB installed and more than 4GB is in use, it’ll slow down to the point that it’s unusable.

Here is what you can install:

Maximum Memory	8.0 GB
Memory Slots	2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

Look for suitable memory products at OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.
