iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device.

Just purchased an iPhone 7 today and received the error message "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device." Don't know what this means and I've never had this problem with any of my previous iPhones. Thanks.

I agree as well. "What was once good is now a mess." So true. So disappointing. I used to love Apple. Now it's Sour Apple. :-( I was hesitant to upgrade my iPhone for a LONG time because the last time I did so, I didn't like all the changes. But since the only constant is change, I decide it was time to bite the bullet and upgrade — and now I've had nothing but obstacles, the greatest of which is not being able to backup my iPhone. BIG problem. And I can't even get my MacBook to recognize my iPhone so that I can go back to the earlier OS. Revolt!

Are you running iTunes 7.5.1? iOS10 requires iTunes 12.5.1 or newer which in turn requires OSX 10.9.5 or newer. Software Update only checks for updates for the current system version you are running but that itself may be out of date. It may or may not be possible to upgrade your computer to the required system. Find your computer model on the http://www.everymac.com web site and near the bottom of the system specification section it will say what OS versions it is capable of running. If you cannot run a newer system you will not be able to sync this phone to your present computer. You can try installing the free El Capitan OSX 10.11. El Capitan may run slower on older machines and require additional RAM purchase (4 GB is a realistic minimum and many recommend 8GB). Doing a big jump in system versions is also more likely to affect old software.

Snow leopard to el capitan, will it cause my macbook to be slow? - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7412959

Current OSX general upgrade information, including system requirements - http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

If you have any PPC generation software that has been running under OSX 10.6 it will not be supported under any later system versions.

Hi Limnos - I'm totally confused by what I've been reading. - Here's my situation, maybe you can help me get this working again. I updated my iPhone 6 using iTunes the same day iOS10 was released. Backups were made as part of the usual process. I always perform this process on my MacBook Pro, which is stuck at OS 10.7.5 and my iTunes is at 12.2.2.25 and never had issues until today. As everyone knows 10.7.5 is the last build for my vintage MacBook Pro.

So my question is, like several other users….. what do I do now? The version of iTunes that I was using to perform the update hasn't changed and neither has my OS. The phone was allowed to update on iOS10 release day and now I'd like to modify some music lists and resync my phone. I can't seem to get past the "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone “iPhone” because an invalid response was received from the device"

After deleting the files in the lockdown folder I am able to at least get to the "Do you want to allow this computer to access info on this iPhone" screen. I press [continue] Then I allow the access to the phone via the dialog screen on the iPhone [trust this computer] and then I'm back to the error message again. "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone “iPhone” because an invalid response was received from the device"

Reading this in the forum ----> Have you updated to iTunes 12.5.1? iOS10 requires iTunes 12.5.1 or newer which in turn requires OSX 10.9.5 or newer. If this was a real requirement how did Apple allow me to update my iOS using all the wrong software on my MBP? Do I buy a new MBP now? Thank you - Mike

what do I do now?

It doesn't matter what you used to update iTunes. What it requires now is iTunes 12.5.1 which requires OSX 10.9.5 or higher. If you want to sync to that phone you have to buy a newer computer. Yes, it would be nice if Apple gave people specific warning except I think there is some Apple mindset whereby they simply cannot believe anybody would ever use a computer that cannot run the newest operating system, so it never occurs to them to add in that feature. It's the same in an Apple Store where they will sell you a phone, not first thinking to ask if your current computer will support it. I have told them I use a G4 from 2002 and it's like I drove up to the place in a horse and buggy -- "Oh yeah, I used one of those when I was in grade school." Look at all the pictures of Apple customer service people. They are in their twenties and at that age a computer like yours was probably introduced when they started dating. 😝

You're not the first to come here with this situation and probably not the last. 😟

This *****. No way can I afford a newer computer right now and I depend on my iPhone for job site photos from clients to help me generate estimates for work and record critical details easily forgotten with just paper notes. I hope some genius can found a way around this.

Use iCloud features.

Or use Image Capture to download photos as you would from any camera.

Or buy an inexpensive digital camera and use it instead.

Start adding the cost of a computer purchase every 5 years to your operating budget.

Thanks for trying to help but none of the iCloud or photo stream ideas work for some reason. Followed all the instructions but the photos just won't show up in the cloud. I also don;t like using the cloud. I like just coming home, plugging in my phone and having iPhoto take in all the images where I process them and out them in files much more easily that that convoluted mess that is iCloud can. I have an SLR but it was nice not having to carry that around or knowing that of I forgot it I had a back up. Tried image capture but it keeps asking me to unlock my phone. My phone isn't locked and I don't use a passcode to access it. Apple really screwed the pooch on this one. I tried the bluetooth function and that won't work anymore either. This is a deliberate act by apple to force those of us with older computers to upgrade. They suck.

I agree. This is a deliberate act by Apple, and it's a very shady and seedy one. I am not going to buy another computer or tablet whatsoever or that watch thing from Apple. I refuse to invest anymore in such a greedy brand/company. What was once good is now a mess.
