theme audio in iMovie 10.1.2

After importing about 100 photos to iMovie 10.1.2, I applied the "modern" theme. The transitions work but there's no audio. The theme preview has audio; but not my project. What am I missing?

Thank you but, no, definitely not a genius. 🙂 Mr. Pogue is closer to that.

I think that the rationale for not including audio with the selected theme is to avoid

overriding whatever other music you might prefer. It gives you versatility. The audio

is available in Sound Effects if you want it. For the most part the audio will be listed

under the same name as the theme, e.g, Bright, Travel, Modern, Playful, Simple.

However, for Sports the audio is listed under Yearbook Long for some reason. And

for Broadcast News the audio is listed under Newscast. Off hand I couldn't find the

audio for Photo Album, but it's probably somewhere in the Sound Effects list.

The DVD footage will be in Mp2 format, and you will need to convert the underlying VOB (video object) files into

something that iMovie can read -- like Mpeg-4, or DV, or .mov.

So, insert your DVD into your computer's DVD reader. When the DVD icon appears on your desktop, click on it. If it automatically plays the DVD, close it. You should see a folder that contains two folders that look like this:

User uploaded file

Your movie files are located in the VIDEO_TS file. (The Audio_TS file is empty and you can ignore it.)

Click on the VIDEO_TS file. You will see something like this:

User uploaded file

The files with the .VOB extensions are your video files. Option-drag them to your desktop, which will copy the files, not move them. You want to leave everything in you DVD folder intact. Then take your copied VOB files and convert them

to one of the codecs I mentioned above, using a free download program like Handbrake or Streamclip. The converted files will play in iMovie and can be edited.

This process should be used only for your own personally generated vids and DVD's, and not for commercially made vids that may have copyright protections.

Rich839,

Another question: I had to duplicate the "modern" sound clip a number of times to match my slideshow length. At the end, I need to split the audio, but I see no way to do so. No matter how I shrink the clip, it keeps playing beyond the end of my slides. How do I make it fade out & stop when the slideshow stops? The "fade" button has no effect, apparently.

Go to the slider bar handle near the Settings button at the right hand side of your screen. Slide that to the right to expand your time line. Now select your audio clip and drag the right hand edge to the left to fit your video. You can fade it out by moving to the left the fade handle (blue dot) on the right hand edge of the audio clip.

Rich, I have another iMovie question—about importing footage.

What's the best way to import video_ts files from a DVD? A commercial outfit (Tape Copy in Houston) is transferring footage from my old DV tapes to a DVD, and evidently I'll need some method of moving these into iMovie. I'd appreciate suggestions/recommendations. Thanks!
