Q: My iTunes just got updated and there's a problem with it, my computer can't read the library anymore.

My iTunes won't work anymore on my computer, I have a Toshiba laptop, and whenever I want to go into iTunes, I have this message pop up "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read by my computer because it's from a newer version of iTunes.  What gives?

iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), Windows 10

    Pending Sectors: 352

    PowerOn Hours: 275

    Temp: Min 1c

    Temp: Max 54c

That number of pending sectors isn't too bad, but I guess if there is an unreadable folder then things will grind to a halt. See if you can reconnect to Windows and try with SyncToy again. Change the options and choose folders so that you're only trying to read data from F00. It that works try to get the files from F01, and so on.

You don't understand, I lost all the files after hooking the ipod up to my mac! Where did they go? How can I get them back?

Have you tried restarting the device and hooking it up to Windows again? The database on the iPod may be fried but the files should still be there unless you synced it. It shouldn't have been possible to sync it without a warning that files would be replaced.

Something like https://www.piriform.com/recuva might be able to read the raw data from the drive and recover files even if they've apparently been deleted.

Recuva seemed to work! Thanks so much! I'm still waiting for ALL those files to copy to itunes so I can see if they'll play. It's almost done though. I'll let you know.

Sounds promising. Caution and patience are both useful when attempting to recover data.

Having one issue. How can I force Itunes to import the files that I put in the "Automatically add to itunes" file? It doesn't seem to be doing it.

Make sure the files you put in there are not marked as hidden, system, or read-only. iTunes should process the contents of the Automatically Add to iTunes folder when it is running. If you have more than one library you need to choose the Automatically Add to iTunes folder in the active library's media folder.

Ok! Thanks so much for all your help! So it finally downloaded all the files, but how do I put the playlists back into itunes if I can't view the ipod's files in itunes? The scripts look like they only work if I can view the playlists in itunes, but I can't. I only see the itunesprefs.plist file.

There would have been a file called <iPod>\iPod_Control\iTunesDB which was the database on the device. Can you find this, or a possible backup or temporary copy of it with Recuva? If you can then you can try putting it back on the device, but getting iTunes to recognize it as a valid library and read from it is a long shot.

There is an itunesdb file that was recovered. I'll try that. Do you know why itunes isn't showing my library after adding it? It doesn't appear to be "thinking", but when I look at the itunes music folder it's all there, but it isn't showing up in itunes at all.

Hmm, if it was added to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, and the tracks have then been moved to iTunes Media\Music\<Artist>\<Album> folders then it ought to be showing in the iTunes library.
