Q: What more control marking Mail messages read...

I would like my Mail messages not marked as read as I move on and off of them.  Right now I have "Mark all messages read when opening a conversation" unmarked.  No matter what I have marked, when I select a message, it marks it as read.

I have the reading pane option selected.  I want to be able to view an email and not have it be marked as automatically read.  Is there a plugin that gives me more control over that?

That setting only applies to additional messages in the "conversation." The selected message is marked read as soon as it is shown, either in the viewing pane or a separate message window. Any other messages grouped into that "conversation" will not be read.

The only way in Mail to prevent messages being marked as read is to close the Viewing pane and only open the messages you want to read.

I do not think it is possible to change this behavior of mail; when you read a message it gets marked as read.  Those crazy apple engineers! I think your only recourse is to either turn off the preview pane or to get in the habit of command-shift-u, or the two finger swipe to the right over a message.

P.S. Sorry, now I see this question was already answered.  It is difficult to see the existing posts sometimes.
