Q: Downloaded 12.5.1.21 and many of the artwork photos on the ARTIST tabs do not show the artist, only a graphic of a microphone. I had before all the artist with their photos and now I don't see them. How can I get them back.?

Before the 12.5.1 on the sidebar when I would click on the "artists", all my artist artwork would appear. Now most of the artists album covers do not appear; only a graphic of a microphone in light blue and light pink.  However, when I click on "albums", all the album artwork appear correctly.  Reviewing my library, all the artwork for each and every song and album is correctly installed.   How do I get back the artwork photo on the "artists" tab on the sidebar?  How do I go about reinstalling the artwork for the artists.  HELP !!

Yours is probably the clearest explanation of the iTunes issue with "Artists." Could you post a pic of the "Artist View" so we can see the problem?

(I'm assuming that the other "views" - Recently Added, Albums, Songs, and Genres - work fine.

    Thanks!

Enclosed a pic showing clearly what I am trying to describe.  I do hope it helps. I have not been able to figure this out at all. And yes, all the other views work fine.

    Thanks for the screenshot.

This is not dissimilar to what I have, but I've included the whole page here:

From what I understand, the circular pics on your iTunes/Artist View happen when you buy songs from Apple. (There are exceptions, of course.) The generic "microphone" icon is from iOS; nothing you can do about it until Apple decides to get rid of the feature.

The circular icons cannot be edited at this time.

Thanks for your input, but I'm hoping for a solution.

1- There are many songs and artists and albums that Apple does NOT have in their inventory. I have been recording music on reel-to-reel since 1964 and have slowly transferring some old, but very good quality music to my iTunes for many years. If I could not find the artwork at iTunes, I would take a photo myself and transfer the artwork into iTunes.

2- The statement that "the circular pics..... happen when you buy songs from Apple"  is not quite accurate. Many of the albums bought on Apple have the "album" photo and information included, but they do not include the album cover on the artist.

3- I have collected over the years, patiently and putting in many hours,  every one of my albums and/or artists way before iTunes became what it is now, just to have them "remove" my work.

3- So a fair question is: How can we get Apple to fix this feature of theirs and not have to wait until Apple decided to get rid of that feature?  Who do we write to, or call at Apple?

I could use some help here. Thanks, Richard

Don't have any solutions, but I did notice another interesting quirk of 12.5.1.21

IF there is an image displayed in the 'Artist' view, it is NOT the same image displayed for any Album cover.

Apparently the image(s) shown in Artist View were specifically selected to display in the round mat.

Given that the artist image is a microphone for everyone in my collection (except U2 because of Songs of Innocence) is there a way I can hide the artist icon entirely (reducing it to a simple list) and view more artists at a time and save on scrolling?

Yes, but not always.  In my case of the 4 albums of Barbra Streisand, only one had a picture and it was NOT the same as the album cover, and there was no way (that I know how) to replace it with the correct album photo.  In some of the cases, the "artist" photo and the "album cover" artwork were one and the same. It seems to me that Apple has a gremlin in its app. It should be looked at by Apple and fix it ASAP.

    Thanks for your commentary.

Hi "growf".  Interesting observation.  My question to you is: Do you why only U2 because of Songs of Innocence appears correctly? What does U2 have in its profile and info that the other songs/artists do not have?  If we can find that out, we may have the solution.

Oh, I can absolutely tell you why only U2 have an icon in my collection.

I don't buy much from the iTunes Store; I have a huge CD collection and I buy my music that way. The only things I've purchased from the iTunes Store are a few individual tracks...and the U2 album that Apple "gifted" everyone. If I look through the artists' pages on the iTunes Store, U2 are the only artist in my Purchased list with a Gallery tab. That seems to be the deciding factor for an artist image to appear: you must have purchased a track through the iTunes Store and that artist must have a Gallery page.

Edit: Actually maybe not. I checked with a friend and they've got images for Steven Wilson who has no Gallery page but does have a headshot on his iTunes Store page. Either way the existence and choice of artist image appears to be entirely in Apple's hands.

Son of a gun.  Fascinating.  I will have to look into that very particular detail with my selections to see if the ones that are "correct" are all part of Apple's "Gallery".  If that is the case, it is a huge mistake or error on their programers or code writers. Many of us, like you and me, have had large CD collections [in my case also a large reel-to-reel collection] and it is not fair to have Apple simply remove all our years of hard work simply because some of the albums may not be in their "gallery".

So how can we bring this issue up to Apple to get them to solve it pronto?

Looks like Apple are no longer using album cover view to populate the artist field and instead using separate artist images. If they are not available it reverts to the microphone

I have same issues in a large music library primarily ripped from CDs or LPs. I noticed that if you control-click the artists with picture icons, the contextual menu includes options to "follow" or "share" the artist, but that the "follow" and "share" options are missing from the artists with the generic microphone icon. So it appears that this may something to do with the social network functions of iTunes.

Thank you "Bright Moments" for your comments and observations. That info is helpful, but I have not found a way to transmit all the info I have been receiving from the support group to the APPLE folks to get this issue solved. I would love to call Apple and talk to someone that may shed light on this frustrating issue.

To all iTunes Support Communities:  Has anything been done to solve that problem of iTunes showing a "microphone icon" on the ARTIST tabs?  I have been trying to find a solution and it has been impossible. Can someone help me?

On a similar note: Is there a way to DELETE iTunes 12.5.1  and load up again the "old" iTunes 11.X so I can get my old photos back of the artists?   I really do not care for iTunes 12.5.1 and what it has done.

Help me, anyone out there !!

    Richard
