Q: 10.0.1 battery drainage issue

Hello ALL.

Wanted to put this out here in HOPES that someone high up in the Apple tree (Corp.) would read this and relay the bad worm issue on the newest iOS update 10.0.1

I'm not new to Apple products nor the iOS, in fact I stood in line for hours to get my hands on the iPhone 3, then the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 5, of course iPhone 6+, and now the iPhone 7 (not the + model...oh how I loath the pre-order sales tactic). Oh, and I've had almost every single iPad model and mini to date, with my newest bad boy the iPad Pro 12.9

I only mention this to let you know I'm used to the iOS infrastructure and it's updates.

Okay...how do I know it's the iOS and not something else, easy... I bought 2 iPhone 7's on launch day. The first one I restored from a backup on my computer through iTunes, which had the latest iOS at that point 9.3.5 and during this restore point I was asked to update to the 10.0.1 update and I did. The other iPhone 7, I didn't have to use a backup and it came pre-loaded with iOS 10.0.0 already installed. So, I have a good comparison to go off of.

Now that I've had the new phones for 2 solid days, their battery usage is completely different. Yes, they have the same settings. Again...this isn't my first rodeo. (I've check the battery usage apps, location services is off, etc, etc.)

The 2nd iPhone 7 running 10.0.0 doing the same task; messaging, emails, and some phone calls was holding about 95% and my 1st iPhone was at 80% (WTH!!)

What really nailed the coffin shut, was when I updated my iPad Pro from 9.3.5 to 10.0.1 and it too started losing battery life almost twice as fast as it was before. Same apps were running as before, no other changes were made.

So, this is when I absolutely knew it was the newest iOS 10.0.1 that is behind the battery drainage issue.

Hello Apple...please fix this soon.

Well, I don't work for Apple, but several thoughts come to mind:

    • I have had every generation iPhone since the original.  I can tell you there was never an iPhone called "iPhone 3".  The second iPhone was "iPhone 3G", followed by "iPhone 3GS".
    • Summarizing your post, it seems you purchased two iPhone 7s with one major difference:  You restored one from an iTunes backup and you set the other one up as new.
    • You then proceeded to compare battery behavior on these two iPhones. You said "I have a good comparison to go ..."
    • But the big difference between the two iPhones, which you did not highlight, is that one has all your applications and associated data, while the other does not.

Therefore, you should check Settings > Battery and see what applications are using your battery.  Note, of course, that the iPhone with all the applications and old data is using more battery than the one not restored from a backup.

Yes...on the 3G part. I got the iPhone in June of 2007. Then I got the iPhone 3G. Wasn't trying to be to OCD on the post thread. LOL! Thanks for catching that though.

I've stated above that I have checked the battery settings to see which applications were using the most battery. Messages was the highest. Which is weird because it's not a data hog nor is it embedded with a lot of GIF's.

I too thought it would be a 3rd party application or old data that was doing this, but with the 2nd iPhone 7 I was using the same applications as the 1st.

The only true difference between the two iPhone 7's is a few applications (that aren't using location services, unless I'm using the app itself) and the photo app., which is holding all my original photos. Other than that they are doing the same work load.

Again...this shouldn't have anything to do with the battery usage.

Also like I said above, my iPad Pro is now experiencing the same thing as my 1st iPhone 7. Coincidence?

    * One of the main reasons I'm posting this on a Community Forum is to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issues.

If not, then like another post I read stated that there have been a few reports of bad batteries in the iPhone 7. Of course they gave some recommendations on how to solve, but they do conclude that one might have to return and get another.

If that be the case with my iPhone, then I only have so many days to return it to the AT&T store and get a replacement. One problem though...Out of Stock! So, I'm not sure how that's going to be handled if I have to go this route.

Thanks for your reply sberman. Do you have the new iPhone 7?

Yes - same issue here.  Had the iPhone 6 and updated to iOS 10 the day it came out.  No battery issues whatsoever.  Got the iPhone 7 the day it came out and updated to iOS 10.0.1 the next day and have had battery issues on it since.  Also checked the battery usage in settings to no avail.  The battery life on the 7 is supposed to be better than the 6/6S, so this makes no sense.  My Apple Watch is also experiencing battery issues too.  The watch was fine when I switched my iPhone 6 to iOS 10 though.  I did the restore from backup off of iTunes when setting up my iPhone 7, so all settings/apps should have carried forward.

The iPhone gets very warm as well.

I am also having battery drainage issues with a new iPhone 7 updated to iOS 10.0.1. Also my Apple Watch (original) is now having battery issues since updating it to Watch OS 3. I am really hoping it just needs a couple of more cycles to sort itself out (or update fix). I took the iPhone 7 off charge (100%) at 7 am this morning and by midday (with almost no use at all - no browsing, no phone calls) it was down to 40%.

By the way in the 4 days I have had iOS 10.0.1 on my iPhone 6, the battery has been destroyed - going from 100% to 5% in less than 2 hours. One day previous to the download it lasted most of day.

Thank you. I was hoping I wasn't alone in this. I truly believe its the 10.0.1 update

Same issue here. Apple is shamelessly not acknowledging this issue.

The connection to the mobile network constantly drains the battery. If I only leave wifi one it behaves normally. The worst part is that I cannot downgrade to iOS 9.

Apple: this is the worst launch of iOS in history. Why did you not notify people about it?  there is not way you didn't know beforehand about it.

Mine fixed itself last Wednesday. Must have been some indexing that happens when you first install. I have a lot of music and photos too.

Well, you must be an exception. Everyone seems to be having these issues with iOS 10. Even iPhone 7 owners.
I should have waited longer before updating. Unfortunately the only way to circumvent it is to have the phone in airplane mode with wifi on. Since its the network that drains the battery. But than how am I supposed to receive calls.

I am sure Apple knew about these issues before launching iOS10. They just didn't bother to inform  anyone and proceeded to abuse their customers as usual.

Not me.  And I am an iPhone 7 owner.

Please do not speak for me.  Thank you.

I am experiencing the same thing with my iPhone 6 after installing iOS 10.02 . Yesterday I opened an app while my battery was reading 42% and it crashed with a dead battery within 15 seconds . I recharged and shut down all apps in the background and checked my battery and what was using how much battery in the last 24 hours. The highest hogs were confirmed as off and still I could feel my phone warming up. Now I am on here looking for answers as to if I was alone or, as now confirmed, is it something widespread. Thanks for your post , I hope Apple sees it and that an answer is forthcoming.

Like you, I'm not experiencing any issues with my iPhone 6s with iOS 10.0.2, nor my iPad Mini 4 with iOS 10.0.2.

To the OP, these issues generally come about with backup usages, but using a backup to restore a phone will not always result in this. An errant file, or other condition can cause these things. I've never experienced one, and I've never turned off all of these things I see people recommend, like location services, Bluetooth, wi-fi, etc. They are all on with my device, all the time. I even have an Apple Watch connected via Bluetooth. Restoring a backup again could possibly correct the issue, I've seen that. I've also seen users restore their device to factory and then restore the backup and it get corrected. The one poster that said it took them a day or so is another action I've seen, as the device indexes itself.
